Linea Caffe
Andrew Barnett's roasts sit behind coffee programs all over the Bay Area. He cooked before he roasted. He has run Linea since 2013.
Why go
Walk into Pinhole in Bernal Heights and the house drip is a Linea blend. They call it Masarap, Tagalog for delicious, and Barnett built it for JoEllen Depakakibo's wedding in 2017. Their decaf espresso is Linea's Big Calm.3
Cesar Hernandez describes the drink list as purist, with nothing dessert-like on it. The one oddity is a shrub, fermented and tangy and uncaffeinated, $5.50 in September 2023.2 Hernandez credits him with awards from bodies like the Good Food Foundation, for beans he roasts himself. He does not say in which category or year.
Order this / avoid
- Order: espresso. Bicchieri sends readers to the roaster near Mission Bay for it, and this is the room he calls Linea's best known.1
- Order: the shrub on a warm day.
- Order: a bag to brew at home.
- Avoid: coming for a dessert drink.
What locals & experts say
- Paolo Bicchieri, Eater SF, adding Linea to his seventeen best San Francisco coffee shops in January 2026:
Andrew Barnett is a mythical San Francisco espresso savant.
1 - Cesar Hernandez, in the Chronicle's Bay Area coffee guide, September 2023:
The no-frills coffee shop excels in keeping things simple.
