John Bentley trained at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and came up from busboy to the kitchen at Lipizzaner, a French-Viennese San Francisco restaurant, alongside Mario Batali and Joey Altman; he was executive chef at Michael's in Sunnyvale and at the Los Altos Bar and Grill. He ran John Bentley's in a converted Woodside firehouse from 1995 until he sold it in March 2010, and a second John Bentley's on El Camino Real near Atherton from 2004 until it closed after service on 31 March 2018. He retired at 62.
