Philz Coffee (1110 Ocean Ave)
Phil Jaber opened a corner store in the Mission in 1978 and spent twenty-five years blending coffee. The first Philz opened at 24th and Folsom on New Year's Day 2003. That room is where the one-cup-at-a-time pour-over caught on. This is the Ingleside store, on Ocean Avenue, and it opens early.
Why go
You pick a blend off the board. A barista grinds it and drips your cup on its own. Then in go the cream and sugar you asked for. Ask for mint leaves on top and you get them.5 Philz roasts its own beans at a facility in Oakland.2 Laura Waxmann reports that the baristas work those drips at separate stations.3
Two things changed at the company since Jeff rated this door. The 24th Street room served its last day on 16 October 2023, on a lease Philz declined to renew.4 In August 2025 Freeman Spogli made a $145 million bid for the chain. The Los Angeles firm has previously invested in Popeyes and El Pollo Loco.3
The store's own page says it is built for the City College and San Francisco State crowd.1
Order this / avoid
- Order: ahead in the app and skip the line.1
- Avoid: an evening plan. The doors shut in the late afternoon, every day of the week.1
What locals & experts say
- Phil Jaber, the founder, asked by 7x7 in 2013 which neighborhood he calls home:
Every shop I have I call home.
5 - Julie Zigoris walked Ocean Avenue for The San Francisco Standard in March 2024 and the coffee shop she stopped at is Java on Ocean, every table taken by somebody with a laptop.6
- I haven't found a critic who has written about the coffee at this store.
Good to know
- Which door: 1110 Ocean Avenue. Philz had a dozen San Francisco stores when it closed the Mission one.4

Jeff's take (his words)
- His review (Jeff, first-hand, 5 stars, 30 May 2017): no words with it.
Verdict
could-visit — It is fine for a working morning. Do not cross town for it.
