Sons & Daughters
Harrison Cheney makes his own vinegars, and there are many of them. Sons & Daughters holds Two MICHELIN Stars and a Green Star in the 2026 California selection. Cheney moved it off Bush Street in late 2025, into a Mission kitchen four times the size of the old one.
Why go
The 18th Street room is lined in reclaimed Douglas fir and redwood. Preservation is the method. Cured and fermented vegetables, foraged mushrooms and seafood all go through it, and Cheney's New Nordic training shows in all of it. His British half turns up in the snacks.
Frida Blomdahl Hay runs the floor and took the 2026 MICHELIN Guide California Service Award for it. Cheney was a James Beard Best Chef: California finalist the same month, in a category Dave Beran of Seline in Santa Monica won.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the rutabaga noodles, dressed with pork fat and a buttery sabayon. This is the dish the guide files as the signature.1
- Order: the Scotch egg, which is quail sausage wrapped around a molten quail egg.1
- Order: the perry granita with whey caramel and rose geranium jelly, if the dessert course is still running it.1
What locals & experts say
- The MICHELIN inspector, 2026 California selection:
Now ensconced in a roomier space, Sons and Daughters has never felt more personal and passionate.
1 - MacKenzie Chung Fegan and Cesar Hernandez, San Francisco Chronicle, March 2026, at No. 21:
Acidity is held in the highest regard at Sons & Daughters.
3 - Frida Blomdahl Hay, to David Shortell for the MICHELIN Guide, June 2026:
Every table faces the kitchen, creating a visual connection to the team and the work behind each dish.
2 - MacKenzie Chung Fegan, reviewing the old Bush Street room for the Chronicle in October 2024, makes the case for why Nordic cooking is worth doing here at all, and then shows Cheney bending it: in her fine dining guide she picks out a salad of tomatoes and unripe plums
dressed with cucumber juice scented, like an expensive candle, with tomato leaves.
6 The garums, the kombuchas, the toasted hay and the porridge are all present, she writes, and nothing in Copenhagen tastes like the result.5 - Harrison Cheney, to Elena Kadvany for the Chronicle three days before the Mission room opened, was not coy about the plan:
it's not a secret: I have the mindset that this year's the year
the restaurant wins a third star.4
Good to know
- The evening: twenty-four courses, designed to run about three and a half to four hours. It opens in a communal lounge for roughly the first half hour before you are walked to the table.2
- Price: the guide prices this $$$$.1
- The room: 3,300 square feet in the space that was Osito, which closed in spring 2025. Teague Moriarty opened Sons & Daughters with Matt McNamara in 2010 and is Cheney's co-owner now.4
- Where: 2875 18th Street, in the Mission.
Verdict
must-visit — Book nothing after it, and book it for two. The money here buys technique, and Cheney spends most of it on vegetables.
