Swan Oyster Depot
Sicilian sashimi, salmon and tuna and scallops laid out under olive oil with capers and sea salt, and it is not written on the menu. Eighteen stools at a marble counter, cash only, doors at 8am.
Why go
The counter has been on Polk Street since 1903 and the menu is still handwritten. Julia Chen reviewed it for the Infatuation in September 2024 and described the plate people come for: Thick slices of salmon, tuna, and scallops are lined up into a raw fish rainbow, doused in olive oil (hence, Sicilian), and finished off with capers and sea salt. It'd be a miss to leave without ordering this.
1 The dish is technically off-menu and Chen notes it stopped being a secret after the invention of Google.
Eighteen wooden stools face a worn marble counter, the till takes cash, and a mix of tourists and regulars starts lining up before the 8am open.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Sicilian sashimi. Add oysters, which Chen says
arrive ice-cold, plump, and shimmering,
with mignonette, lemon and hot sauce on the counter.1 - Order: the crab cocktail if you want Dungeness without the work. Chen:
This is an especially good choice if you want to eat crab legs without having to crack and peel one yourself.
1 - Avoid: the Boston clam chowder as the point of the meal. Chen calls it
thinner than other versions around town
and useful mainlyto line your stomach with cream before going all in on sea creatures.

What locals & experts say
- The Infatuation SF (Julia Chen, 27 September 2024):
allegations of racist remarks towards customers make the fresh-as-hell seafood taste a little bitter.
Chen's advice follows:if you want to minimize your chances of being yelled at while eating oysters, clam chowder, or anything else from the ocean, there are lots of other equally great (and better) seafood options in the city.
1 The allegation is a customer's, reported by the San Francisco Chronicle and linked from that review. - The Infatuation SF, guide inclusion: the same outlet files it under
18 Restaurants That Are Actually Worth Waiting In Line For,
which is an editor's list and not a second verdict on the cooking.2
Good to know
- Timing: doors at 8am, and the queue is the whole planning problem. Lunch is the meal.
- Booking: none taken. Eighteen stools, first come.
- Paying: cash.
- Getting there: Polk at California, walking distance from the top of Nob Hill.
- What is published: one bylined review, from September 2024. Nothing newer has appeared since.
Verdict
should-visit — A hundred and twenty-three years of one counter, eighteen stools, and a raw fish plate that is not written on any menu: salmon, tuna and scallops under olive oil with capers and sea salt. You can order that, and you can plan a morning around it, which earns the line on the sidewalk. Two things hold it a rung below must-visit. Only the Infatuation has published a verdict on this room, and Julia Chen's review carries an allegation of racist remarks toward customers plus her own advice that there are better seafood options in the city if you would rather not be yelled at.
