The Progress
The bar here serves a kimchi hot dog that never makes the printed menu, and Eater tells you to order it before it sells out. The Progress holds One MICHELIN Star in the 2026 California selection, and the Chronicle's critics put it second in the Bay Area for 2026.
Why go
Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski run this room with their managing partner Elizabeth DePalmer. The venue's own page files it as an Atomic Workshop production. The dining room rises two stories in wood, stone and tile under skylights, and the plates come out to be shared, so order across the table.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Liberty Farms duck. It arrives with a mountain of crispy peanut fried rice and it is the plate the inspector says somebody at the table has to get.1 Half a bird ran $74 when The Infatuation priced it in January 2023.5
- Order: the burrata with fried butter beans and Yerena Farms strawberries, or the seaweed noodles with brown butter and dashi. Both are opening plates.1
- Order: the thick-cut porcini toast, whenever the card has it.5
What locals & experts say
- The MICHELIN inspector, 2026 California selection:
this sunny NorCal-meets-Nordic destination is as disarming as it is ambitious
.1 - MacKenzie Chung Fegan and Cesar Hernandez, San Francisco Chronicle, March 2026:
The Progress, statuesque sister to State Bird Provisions (No. 36) and Anchovy Bar, is a restaurant for all occasions, the kind of place where you can picture celebrating life's milestones and Saturday's late-night cravings alike.
2 - A year before that they opened on the line the room has run on since it arrived next to State Bird Provisions in 2014:
Around here, we do things a little differently.
7 - The card takes reading, and Julia Chen says so in the review that put this at 8.6 for The Infatuation: it is laid out as a Venn diagram, with starters in the middle and
vegetables, mostly
andseafood
on the outsides.5 In her Fillmore guide she says she would walk the Crosstown Trail for the duck and the peanut fried rice.6

- Where: 1525 Fillmore Street, in the Fillmore.
Verdict
must-visit — Reserve early. Of the starred rooms in this city this is the one I would take a group to.
