Zushi Puzzle
Roger Chong runs the sushi bar at Zushi Puzzle on Lombard Street with his wife. He buys the fish other Marina counters skip and arranges it into big sashimi platters.
Why go
Paolo Bicchieri's Eater map says Chong steers people at the bar toward whatever came in freshest.1 Dianne de Guzman, writing Eater's Marina map, notes that he goes past the yellowtail-salmon-white-fish default. The platters are what he is known for.2
The house closes the meal on sorbet, sometimes under wasabi, sometimes under kobe fat ice cream.
Taylor Abrams reviewed the room for The Infatuation in 2017 and left it unrated. He gave one instruction: do not skip the hand rolls.3 I have not found a newer rating.
Order this / avoid
- Order: whatever Chong pushes at you from behind the bar.
- Order: the hand rolls.
- Avoid: the regular menu at a table.
What locals & experts say
- Zushi Puzzle's own account of the customer it cooks for, in Roger Chong's words: indulge in
the lesser known delicacies of the sea if you're a, 'wild sushi eater.'
4 - Paolo Bicchieri, Eater SF:
the move is not to order off the regular menu but to call and get a reservation at the sushi bar.
