Tunnock's.

producer · Uddingston, South Lanarkshire

Thomas Tunnock bought a bakery in Uddingston for eighty pounds in December 1890 and the firm has never left the village. The factory stands on the site of the bakery where he served his apprenticeship in the 1880s, the fifth generation of the family is in the business, and the four things everyone knows it for were all designed in the 1950s.

What they make

  • Caramel Wafer. The 1952 one runs five wafer layers and caramel under milk chocolate, in the red and gold foil.
  • Teacake. From 1956, and the build has not changed: a biscuit base, mallow piped on by hand, milk chocolate over the top.
  • Snowball. The 1954 sibling of the teacake takes coconut on the outside and carries no biscuit under it.
  • Caramel Log. A 1955 wafer rolled in toasted coconut, and the one that found a second home in the Middle East.
