Humble Sea Brewing Co.
The cans are surf-kook nonsense and the lagers are decoction-mashed in copper and lagered horizontally. Humble Sea Helles took Best in Show at the 2021 California Craft Beer Cup, and the Pils and the Helles both took World Beer Championships gold in 2024.
Why go
Frank Scott Krueger and his partners opened on Swift Street in 2017 and put a word into Bay Area beer: Hop Culture credits them with introducing the 'Foggy IPA,' Bay Area terminology for NE IPA.
What the branding hides is the slow half of the brewery. Its own About page claims decoction mashing in copper kettles and horizontal lagering tanks,
which is a lot of trouble to go to for a Helles, and the Helles is the beer that keeps winning. The Westside room is an old industrial unit on Swift, and the food is not theirs: Fonda Felix empanadas run all day, and a different truck parks outside each day of the week.
Order this / avoid
- Order: Socks & Sandals if you want the famous one, the Helles or Penelope Pils if you want the one the judges keep picking. Both took World Beer Championships gold in 2024 by the brewery's own count.1
- Avoid: turning up with your own lunch. The taproom prints
Plz - No outside food
and there is a truck outside anyway.3
What locals & experts say
- Hop Culture (Ben Butler, 8 April 2019):
Humble Sea finds fans through irreverence and a quality product.
2 - Humble Sea, on its own range: the styles run
from 'Wait, you can do that with beer?' to precision-engineered German lagers.
1 - Awards, scoped: every medal on this page belongs to a beer rather than to this room, and every one is the brewery's own count off its own site. The bodies are the Beverage Testing Institute's World Beer Championships and the California Craft Brewers Association.
Good to know
- Timing: 11am to 9pm daily. Happy hour runs all day Monday and 5pm to 8pm Tuesday to Thursday, and there is trivia in the Seacret Garden on Wednesdays from six.3
- Which door: 820 Swift Street, the Westside brewery. There are six in total, including a seasonal beer garden on the Santa Cruz Wharf.
- The draft list: the brewery posts the day's taps to its Instagram stories rather than the website.
Verdict
could-visit — A brand built on hazy IPA and surf-kook cans that quietly decoction-mashes its lagers in copper and lagers them horizontally, which is why its Helles took Best in Show at the 2021 California Craft Beer Cup and why the Pils and the Helles both took World Beer Championships gold in 2024. Socks & Sandals is the beer the name is famous for. The Swift Street room pours sixteen taps with empanadas from Fonda Felix all day and a different truck outside each day of the week. It lands at could-visit rather than higher because every award on the page is the brewery's own count and no writer outside the company has been read on the beer.
