Toby's Coffee Bar
Espresso on Linea beans with Straus milk, poured from a counter inside a 1942 feed barn in the middle of Point Reyes Station.12
Why go
The milk comes from up the road. The counter pours San-Francisco-roasted Linea coffee with organic milk from Straus Family Creamery, a family-owned dairy business located just up the road,
which in West Marin is a supply chain you can walk.1 The baking is done nearer still. The coffee bar says its pastry comes from its sister restaurant Osteria Stellina across the street and from Brickmaiden Breads, where Celine Underwood makes the bread.1 The whole thing sits inside a working feed barn that the same family has run since 1942, selling hay and grain and garden supplies alongside the produce, with a gallery, a yoga studio and the farmers market under the same roof.2 Chef Christian Caiazzo owns the counter.
Order this / avoid
- Order: a coffee with the Straus milk in it and something off the pastry shelf, then take both outside.1
- Avoid: a late afternoon. The counter opens at 6:30am and stops at five, seven days.1
Good to know
- It is a kiosk inside a store. Walk in past the pet food and the garden supplies; the counter is in the barn.2
- Open since 2006, in a building that has been a feed barn since 1942.12
- The farmers market runs from the same address.2
Verdict
could-visit — A coffee counter is a coffee counter, and the rung reflects that rather than any doubt about the espresso. What lifts it off the floor is where the milk comes from: Straus is a few miles up the same road, which is a shorter supply line than almost any city cafe manages. The evidence is the counter's own undated page, so the rung waits on somebody else drinking there and writing it down.
