Seghesio Family Vineyards
Zinfandel and Italian heritage varieties, poured on a lawn in downtown Healdsburg with a bocce court on it.1
Why go
Most Healdsburg tasting rooms want to sell you Cabernet. Seghesio grows and farms its own fruit around Sonoma County and pours Zinfandel and the Italian side of the family's list.1 The visit works three ways. There is a Behind The Scenes tour and tasting, there is Bocce & Bottles on the lawn, and there is The Grove, where you buy a glass or a bottle and sit down without a flight or a script.1 That last one is the reason this is an easy afternoon rather than an appointment. The Classico flight is the Zinfandel-and-heritage pour.1
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Classico flight if you want the argument in a glass. The winery links a San Francisco Chronicle roundup of Napa and Sonoma tastings at $30 and under and says the Classico is in it. I have not read that piece, so treat it as their claim.1
- Avoid: walking in six-handed. Call 707-433-3579 first and check there is room.1
Good to know
- Book on Tock, or ring for same-day.1
- No fee is published for any of the three experiences, so the Tock listing is where the price lives.1
- The winery also points at a Robb Report gallery naming its 2021 Omaggio. Same caveat: that is Seghesio citing somebody else, and I have not read it.1
Verdict
could-visit — Seghesio farms its own fruit across Sonoma County and pours Zinfandel and Italian varieties in a Healdsburg town where the default is Cabernet, which is the reason to walk over. The visit works three ways and only one of them is a flight: a behind-the-scenes tour, bocce with a bottle, or a glass in The Grove with nobody talking at you. Booking is on Tock, same-day on 707-433-3579, and six or more should call. The winery links a Chronicle roundup and a Robb Report mention of its 2021 Omaggio, neither of which was read at source, so neither counts toward the rung. Nothing published that I read describes the wine itself.
