Causa and Amazonia
Causa takes its name from the Peruvian dish that Carlos Delgado's kitchen has served there as a single bite of yellow potato mashed with aji amarillo (yellow chile).
Why go
Delgado was born in Lima and was executive chef at José Andrés' China Chilcano for years before he opened this Blagden Alley building with Glendon Hartley and Chad Spangler of Service Bar in 2022 (Eater DC). He told Eater what the tasting menu at Causa, on the ground floor, is for: It's a menu where I take you through flavors as if you were to travel through these regions.
Accepting the James Beard award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic in 2025, he told the room: This whole thing is an immigrant dream, an immigrant story
(Washingtonian). The MICHELIN inspectors give Causa one star and trace the menu to Nikkei cooking, blending Japanese heritage with Peruvian ingredients and technique
(MICHELIN Guide).
Each writer who ate the ceviche course praised it, though each of them got a different fish. In 2022 Tom Sietsema of the Washington Post got week-aged yellowtail and crushed corn with a frozen leche de tigre (tiger's milk, the marinade for the raw fish) under a fog of liquid nitrogen. He stirred the ceviche himself: Fun! Delicious, too
(Washington Post). In early 2024 the blogger kevinEats got amberjack with cancha (toasted corn) for crunch and called it the most unconventional looking, cleverest ceviche I'd ever seen
(kevinEats). In 2025 Thomas Rose had sea urchin, scallops and corn in a leche de tigre that tastes like boiled Pop Rocks, in a good way
(The Infatuation).
The price has more than doubled since the doors opened. Six courses cost $85 in October 2022 (Washington Post), $175 a head plus a $35 service charge in early 2024 (kevinEats), and $179 in July 2026 (Eater DC). Rose saw the whole fish from the case priced from $125 up to $430 for a 4-pound
fish in 2025, on top of the menu. In 2022 Sietsema reported that some diners chafed at the supplements, then $29 to $350: Why the tease after you've already paid up front for the dinner?
Washingtonian put dinner for two at $300 or more
with tax and tip in January 2026 (Washingtonian).
Amazonia, the bar and rooftop upstairs, serves food that the house credits to the Causa kitchen team downstairs
(Causa). Sietsema is the one critic who has written about eating there, in 2022. He had charcoal skewers of chicken thigh, salmon belly and duck tongue, and a lomo saltado (sautéed beef) that he called a class act, stir-fried in a wok to a rosy hue with a wash of sauce that hints of soy but tastes more of beef.
He measured the room that year at 75 decibels, loud enough to need a raised voice, and warned that A 20 percent gratuity is added to your bill.
Washingtonian's 2026 advice for upstairs is to drink past the pisco sour and into the restaurant's massive selection of Peruvian brandy.
Delgado told Sietsema in 2022, I'm the highest-paid food runner here
(Washington Post). Three years on, Thomas Rose wrote that Causa isn't pretentious. It can feel like a house party hosted by chefs
(The Infatuation).
Order this / avoid

. Rose in 2025:Like gelato's more elegant cousin, we could eat this every sunset.

Verdict
should-visit — Book Causa for Carlos Delgado's six-course tour of Peru, from the chef who won the 2025 James Beard award for the Mid-Atlantic. It cost $179 a head in July 2026, more than twice the 2022 price, and a whole fish from the case cost extra in 2025. Upstairs at Amazonia, a pisco sour was $9 at happy hour the same summer.
