Kemuri Tatsu-Ya
Tatsu Aikawa and Takuya Matsumoto put a Japanese izakaya inside the old Live Oak Barbecue room, and kemuri means smoke.5 The Hot Pocketz are abura-age stuffed with brisket and gouda and griddled in sharp cheddar.4
Why go
Brandon Watson called the room a biography. Aikawa was born in Tokyo, Matsumoto is a first-generation Japanese American, both grew up in Texas, both worked as hip-hop DJs, and the room tells all of that while honoring the barbecue joint that stood here before.4 Watson wrote that the space somehow feels wholly Austin while being both redolent of the frenetic energy of Tokyo izakayas and the quieter, dust-layered history of Central Texas meat markets.
4 The smoke reaches past brisket into mackerel, eel and duck breast with orange ponzu.5 And the plain dishes carry it too, which is the part Watson rated highest: Gorgonzola and a sweet soy glaze on custardy tofu, dadachamame edamame standing up to smoke, barley miso aioli on charred shishitos.4 It holds a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand.6
Order this / avoid
- Hot Pocketz, abura-age stuffed with brisket and gouda, then fused inside a griddled wrap of sharp cheddar.4
- The bento box, built off any smoked meat on the menu, from miso-BBQ brisket to smoked unagi. It is a do-it-yourself handroll setup for the table.1
- Shio kara from the chinmi list, which is squid marinated in its own guts. Watson's instruction:
Order it anyway. It is bracingly bright, a terrific palate cleanser.
4 - Barbecue tsukemen. The noodles come separate from a broth
made thick and rich with brisket, scallion, and smoked jalapeño,
and you drag them through it.5 - Guaca-poke, which is tuna, pickled jalapeno, red onion, daikon sprouts and wasabi, and Watson says it
effortlessly melds both of its namesakes.
4 - Tokyo street corn, grilled cobs slathered with cotija and yuzu-pepper aioli in place of mayo.5
- Avoid: the barbecue boat. Watson found it
satisfying but didn't quite have the electricity of the other dishes.

What locals & experts say
- Brandon Watson, for the Chronicle, on what the room adds up to:
Kemuri traveled to Lockhart by way of Tokyo, but along the way they rediscovered Austin.
4 - Watson on the chinmi menu, which is the part most people miss: it is
a collection of delicacies rated on a scale of funkiness that encompasses Kenny G, Bootsy Collins, Leslie Cochran, and James Brown.
4 - Watson's own quibble, and it is worth knowing: he wondered whether a cornmeal base
instead of the traditional hakurikiko flour would have brought out the octopus' sweetness
in the chili cheese takoyaki.4 - Jolene M. Bouchon, for Austin Monthly, in the same season:
Kemuri's got laid-back charm, craveworthy drinks, and damn good food, thanks to Japanese and Texan cuisines brought together in harmony. It's one of my favorite spots of the year.
5 - The Infatuation Austin rates it 9.0, bylined Nicolai McCrary, page dated 17 April 2025:
Kemuri Tatsu-Ya is a product of both Japan and Texas, and as a result it's a dining experience that couldn't really exist outside of Austin.
1 - MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, on the guide's own page for this address, filed as Izakaya, Barbecue.6
- CultureMap made Tatsu Aikawa a Chef of the Year nominee in its 2026 Tastemaker Awards, across his group rather than for this room alone. That programme runs on nominations and a public vote.7
Good to know
- Walk-in only, and the wait gets long. There is a rickshaw bar in the front yard that doubles as the host stand, so you queue with a drink.5
- The drinks list is not an afterthought. Michael Phillips of Midnight Cowboy built it: matcha in a Painkiller, canned milk tea in a milk punch, Okinawan molasses in an Old Fashioned.4 The Japanese whisky list is one of the biggest in town and there is a house Tatsu-Ya sake bottling you will not see elsewhere.1
- Order a sake bomb and it costs $100, because Kemuri pours one for the whole room.1
- Dessert is two things, roasted banana pudding with Okinawan kokuto sugar and miso caramel, or pecan pie with yuzu.5
- Hygiene: no finding. Austin Public Health scored the kitchen 90 on 21 November 2025, then 83, 91, 94 and 91 before that. Nothing near Austin's failing line.3
Jeff's take (his words)

Verdict
must-visit — The chinmi list is the reason to bring four people, and shio kara is the one dish in this city most likely to surprise somebody who thinks they have eaten everything. Build the rest of the table on smoked meat: the bento box, the tsukemen, the Hot Pocketz. It is walk-in only and the queue is real, so put your name down and drink at the rickshaw bar out front.
