NAYA
Shiitake mapo tofu under red Sichuan peppercorn, on a menu that also runs lamb kibbeh meatballs and whipped feta.12
Why go
NAYA opened on 9 July 2026 at 506 West Ave, in the downtown room Irene's left when it closed in 2024.1 The kitchen's own word for what it cooks is Mediterr-Asian, and its own claim is that the menu is built on real technique, not trend
, which on the plate means hummus and whipped feta sitting alongside yellowtail crudo and salmon crispy rice.21 General manager Matthew Pawlak runs the bar program and picks the shiitake mapo tofu as his own dish, made with red Sichuan peppercorn, scallion and cilantro.1 The room is five weeks old and no critic has reviewed it yet, so everything below is what the kitchen and one opening report say, and none of it is a verdict.
Order this / avoid
- The shiitake mapo tofu. Red Sichuan peppercorn, scallion, cilantro. It is the one dish anyone connected to the room has singled out.1
- Lamb kibbeh meatballs and whipped feta if you want the Mediterranean half of the argument.2
- Salmon crispy rice or the yellowtail crudo for the other half. Both are on the kitchen's own featured list and in the opening report.21
- The Midnight Bazaar, the house espresso martini: vodka, Grind espresso liqueur, Romana amaro, turbinado, brewed espresso, shaved white chocolate. The amaro is the part that makes it worth ordering over the standard build.1
- Avoid: a quiet dinner after 9:30pm. That is when the DJ sets start.1
What locals & experts say
- No published verdict on this kitchen exists yet. The only account of it is Community Impact's opening report of 23 July 2026, which states facts about the opening and offers no judgment on the food. This is a five-week-old restaurant, not a room that has been ignored.1
- The general manager's own line, verbatim to Community Impact:
Come in and let us create an experience for you, but then go tell your story to all of Austin.
He also invites guests to read the paragraph at the top of the cocktail list and order whichever drink name jumps out first.1 - Not in the MICHELIN Guide, and the check is weak by construction: the newest Texas selection is 2025 and this room opened in July 2026.6
Good to know
- Hygiene: no inspection score exists yet, and the calendar is why. The newest inspection published anywhere in the register is 22 May 2026 and this room opened, so no permit here could have been inspected and published yet, which is missing data rather than a finding.3
- Timing: dinner and late. DJ sets playing Afro House start at 9:30pm.1
- Still being built: an upstairs cocktail bar was announced as coming, and an outdoor bar with a built-in bar, hookah from mid-August and draft beer once finished. Neither was open when the opening report ran.1
- A different business shares the name. A Middle Eastern fast-casual chain trades as NAYA on its own separate domain, selling customizable bowls, salads and rolls, and its published location finder is headlined for New York and Boston. The Austin room is an unrelated independent at 506 West Ave, which is settled by the Google identifier it publishes for itself.42
- Getting there: 506 West Ave, downtown, west of Lamar off West Fifth.1
Verdict
listed — Five weeks old on West Avenue, in the room Irene's left in 2024, calling itself Mediterr-Asian and meaning it: lamb kibbeh meatballs and whipped feta on the same list as salmon crispy rice and a shiitake mapo tofu built on red Sichuan peppercorn. The bar is doing real work, with a pandan-misted gin and yuzu build and an espresso martini running Romana amaro under the coffee. No critic has reviewed it yet. DJ sets start at 9:30pm, which tells you what the second half of the night is for. It is on the board and worth watching, and there is no evidence yet that would justify sending anyone across town.
