Scallop crudo arrives under coconut leche de tigre, and the entire kitchen is gluten free rather than a section of it.12
Why go
The cooking is Yucatecan and it says so on the plate. A panucho comes under cochinita pibil, sikil pak with blistered cherry tomatoes, and tikin xic finished with xnipec over mashed plantain, wrapped in a banana leaf.12 A wood-fired grill scents the room and the raw bar runs on Gulf seafood. That follows from the ownership: Adam Weisberg and Jay Huang also run Lucky Robot, a sustainable-seafood room on South Congress.23 The two critics who have written about it split on where the value sits. Nicolai McCrary says the room outruns the food; Jessi Cape says she would come back for one dish alone.12
Order this / avoid
- Scallop crudo, sitting in a shallow pool of coconut leche de tigre with an orange wedge under each slice. The crudos and ceviches are what McCrary names first.1
- Charred pulpo. Both reviewers land on it, cooked through cleanly with fried chickpeas alongside for texture.1
- Enmoladas verdes, cochinita pibil or lion's mane, on blue corn.2
- The tikin xic, whichever fish came in that day.2
- Avoid the pork entomatada. Seasoned well and generously garnished, and McCrary's was overcooked.1
What locals & experts say
- Nicolai McCrary rates it 7.9 for The Infatuation:
The food is solid enough to keep you wanting more, but it ultimately takes a back seat to an experience that evokes a buzzy spot somewhere off the coast of Mexico.
1 - Jessi Cape, reviewing it for the Austin Chronicle in February 2024:
A major standout was the wonderful, deeply flavored enmoladas verdes.
2 - Cape also caught the kitchen changing its mind in public. The gluten-free flatbread had been reformulated from coconut milk to a blend of tapioca, rice flour and masa, for consistency. An update to her piece the next day records that Jay Huang put the original recipe back.2
Good to know
- Dinner only, every night.3
- Celiac-safe by design. Cape ate the whole menu with no cross-contamination worry. Pineapple runs through the menu, which matters if that is your allergy, and the staff handled hers on both visits.2
- Hygiene: no inspection record, which is not the same as a clean one. Austin Public Health holds nothing for this address under either trading name, and for a room open since October 2023 that gap is unexplained. Austin Public Health holds records for twelve premises on the same stretch of South First. So the street is covered and this door is not.4
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note:
Hot new opening 2024.
The room actually opened on 22 October 2023, which puts his note a quarter late.3
Verdict
should-visit — Book it, and ask for the covered patio, which is where the Chronicle's reviewer wanted to sit on both her visits. Drink off the agave shelf and leave the cocktail list alone. Go early in the evening, because she found items sold out across every section of the menu on a Friday night.
