Quality Seafood Market
Gulf oysters run a dollar and the East Coast varieties around two, shucked at a bar that runs down the middle of the fish market.1
Why go
The layout is the argument. One half is a market with a glass case of whatever came in, the other half is a counter that fries, grills or blackens the same fish. The bar sits between them.1 Nicolai McCrary rated it 8.3 for The Infatuation in June 2024 and puts the freshness at the top of anything in Austin.1 The business has traded in some form since the 1930s.1
Order this / avoid
- Oysters at the bar. Expect at least half a dozen East Coast varieties at around $2 and Gulf oysters at $1.1
- At happy hour, peel and eat shrimp run $0.35 a piece, and by the quarter pound the rest of the time.1
- To eat properly: the Go Fish dinner, where you pick up to three varieties. McCrary's own build is fried shrimp, oysters and clam strips.1
- Or the fried shrimp po'boy, the same shrimp in a toasted hoagie.1
What locals & experts say
- Nicolai McCrary, The Infatuation, 8.3, June 2024, on the fried dinners: they arrive
fried to a beautiful golden brown, and they're seasoned with just enough salt to let the seafood shine
. He describes a bar you would expect in an old fishing town, with regulars on half the stools.1 - Where one chef went on his day off. The Austin Chronicle asked a dozen Austin chefs where they eat after a shift in September 2011, and James Holmes of Olivia named this counter:
People have been known to find me at Quality Seafood on my days off, drinking cold beer and eating raw oysters as well.

Good to know
- Where: 5621 Airport Blvd, in North Loop. You order at the counter.1
- Hygiene: clean. Austin Public Health has one business at this address. It scored 89 in November 2025, 94 in May 2025, 88 in November 2024, 81 in May 2024 and 94 in December 2023. Nothing near the city's failing line of 70.3
Jeff's take (his words)
- His ruling, 2026-08-09: Austin Oyster Co. is "newer and better", and this counter should not sit at the top of the city's page.
- Note: not for the seafood; check the market; unclear if its good. i probably prefer mongers. That came later, in conversation on 9 August 2026.
Verdict
should-visit — The market case is the argument for this counter over a restaurant buying the same fish at one remove.
