Sangam Chettinad Indian Cuisine
The Sangam Special Grand Meal is US$22 and the Chronicle's critic says it feeds two.1
Why go
Taylor Holland walked into this strip mall at Parmer and McNeil for the thali and left recommending the whole place. The Grand Meal is two chappathis, chicken curry, mutton curry, fish curry, shrimp, dry chicken, a boiled egg, three vegetable dishes, sambar, rasam, dhal, yogurt, appalam, pickle, rice and dessert. The south non-veg thali comes as nine small bowls and two large, one of chicken curry and one of white rice, with paratha and a papadum piled on top.1 Chettinad is a region of Tamil Nadu and the kitchen cooks to it, working star anise, whole red chillies, cumin, fenugreek, fennel, clove, bay, turmeric and tamarind.2 The dining room fills with North Austin's Indian community, a line forms outside at lunch, and bi-level robots run the food to the booths.1
Order this / avoid
- The Sangam Special Grand Meal if there are two of you. The south non-veg thali if there is one.1
- Then the deep cuts: anchovy curry, curd rice, beetroot halwa, rose milk, and the run of 65 dishes, which the menu carries as chicken, fish, mushroom, paneer and eral. Owner Nalluraj Devaraj's account of the number is that birds are slaughtered at a retirement age of 65 days, and the sauce spread from there.1
- Avoid: planning on thali to take away. The owner told the Chronicle it runs at lunch only because the packaging costs eat the margin.1
What locals & experts say
- Taylor Holland, walking out past the line in the Austin Chronicle, April 2024:
Their food is as genuine an expression of Indian cuisine as you'll find in Austin, plus it's copious and affordable. Highly recommended.
1 - I have not found a second review of this kitchen. The Infatuation has no page for it.
Good to know
- Hygiene: Austin Public Health scores the kitchen 85, inspected 7 April 2026, after 80 in June 2025 and 93 in December 2024. Austin runs a 100-point demerit scale where higher is better and 70 is the failing line. So none of the three is a finding. The line dipped and came back.3
- Getting there: the strip mall on the corner of Parmer and McNeil, next to a Goodwill.1
Verdict
should-visit — Walk in. A second branch trades under the same name in Round Rock, and everything on this page is the Parmer Lane room. The cooking is specific enough to be worth the drive north.
