Seven Grand
The back bar opened with more than 400 whiskeys on it, running from Maker's Mark and Japanese Nikka Coffey Grain to Tomatin Scotch and Waco-made Balcones Baby Blue.1
Why go
The cocktail list is whiskey and nothing else, built around five classics: Old Fashioned, Sazerac, Rye Manhattan, Whiskey Sour, Mint Julep.1 Beyond that there are a few Texas beers and one red and one white, and that is the whole drinks proposition.1 The bar runs a Whiskey Society, with classes and tastings led by master distillers and brand ambassadors.1 It is the third Seven Grand after Los Angeles and San Diego, from Cedd Moses, Eric Needleman and Andrew Abrahamson of 213 Hospitality, the same group behind Half Step on Rainey.1 Doors at 5pm, daily.2
Order this / avoid
- Ask for the flight before the cocktail. The bar's stated purpose is making whiskey approachable through flights, tastings and gentle twists on the classics, so the flight is the house's own front door.1
- If you want a cocktail, the five it is built on are the Old Fashioned, Sazerac, Rye Manhattan, Whiskey Sour and Mint Julep.1
- The back patio has its own bar with a smaller selection and community tables, which is where a group of six should sit.1
- Avoid: planning to eat. There is no kitchen and no intention of building one. Outside food is welcome.1
What locals & experts say
- The Austin Chronicle covered the opening, bylined Thea Newell, 16 June 2017, with the full drinks specification.1
- Thea Newell, verbatim:
The 400 diverse whiskey selections (with more than 300 more eventually on the way) are no mere set-dressing.
She also states the bar's own aim, which is to make whiskeyaccessible and approachable
in a city that reaches for tequila first.1 - CultureMap Austin still described the program as 400-plus bottles two years on, in an October 2019 roundup of the city's whiskey bars.2
- Jeff's saved note reads "Pot still of austin." The Pot Still is the Glasgow whisky bar with several hundred bottles behind the counter, and he is using it as a yardstick for the size of this back bar rather than as a claim about the drinks list.
Good to know
- Hygiene: record found and current. Austin Public Health has this kitchen on record at 405 E 7th St, scoring 90 on 5 June 2025 and 87 in July 2024. Austin's failing threshold is below 70, so nothing here is a finding.4
- The bottle count is a 2017 number. It was published at opening and repeated in 2019. No current count has been published, so treat 400-plus as the floor the bar was built on rather than today's inventory.1
- One near miss on the register. 1405 Revival LLC on East 7th matches on the digits and is a different business at a different number.4
Verdict
could-visit — A downtown whiskey room that opened with 400-plus bottles across the British Isles, Texas and everywhere else, and a cocktail list built entirely on whiskey around five classics. No kitchen, no plans for one, outside food welcome. Jeff's note calls it the Pot Still of Austin, which is his own comparison to the Glasgow whisky bar and a fair way to set expectations for the size of the back bar.
