Tiki Tatsu-Ya
Crab Lagoon is rangoon cheese loosened with sweet crabmeat, scooped on wonton chips, with a pineapple chili jam on the side.1
Why go
The group's own account of itself starts with Tatsu Aikawa cooking at Urasawa, the Michelin-starred kaiseki and sushi bar in Los Angeles, then coming back to Austin in 2012 to open Ramen Tatsu-Ya.2 Tiki is the room where that house lets the concept run, and the kitchen work survives the theme.1 Musubi comes topped with housemade Spam. The Poke Cruise runs from a plain yellowfin to a Filipino sweet shrimp kinilaw with mango, toasted coconut and macadamia oil. The bar builds savoury on purpose: the mai tai pairs Jamaican and Martinique rums and cuts the orgeat with miso and almond, and the painkiller runs on shiro-miso coconut cream. Nicolai McCrary rates it 8.0.
Order this / avoid
- Order: Crab Lagoon, and order a second one after the pu pu platter arrives, which is the review's own advice.1
- The sampler: the pu pu platter, fried blowfish tails, octopus karaage, wings, pork gyoza and taro tots on a tray the size of a small table.1
- Drink: the mai tai for the miso almond orgeat, or the S.O.S. on gin and lemongrass shochu if you want the large format that is actually a drink.1
- Avoid: ordering the theatre for its own sake. The orbs and the model ships arrive under flickering lights and rolling thunder, and they are the least interesting thing on a menu that put macadamia oil in a kinilaw.1
What locals & experts say
- The Infatuation Austin, Nicolai McCrary, 13 August 2025, 8.0: on Crab Lagoon,
The wonton chips are the perfect vessel for scooping up rangoon cheese with sweet crabmeat, and the side of pineapple chili jam adds a bit of spice.
On the mai tai:Tiki's miso-almond orgeat gives the drink an almost-savory element.
1 - The house, in its own words: Tatsu-Ya dates itself to fall 2012 and Ramen Tatsu-Ya, opened by Tatsu Aikawa with friends and family after a stint at Urasawa in Los Angeles, with the stated aim of bringing authentic Japanese ramen to Texas. That is the lineage this bar sits in, and it is why the drinks reach for miso and shochu rather than syrup.2
Good to know
- Booking: weekends are hard. Weekdays and the hour after opening are relaxed and, per McCrary, no less fun.1
- The room: beach house upstairs, cave downstairs, Skee-Ball, and a seventeen-minute fictional origin story recited over the bathroom speakers. It is also on the venue's own site if you would rather not stand there.1
- Hygiene: Austin Public Health scores the kitchen 91, inspected 15 July 2025, after a 92 in June 2024. Austin's is a 100-point demerit scale where higher is better and 70 is the failing line, so this is no finding.3
- One door: the city holds a single premises under this name and none at the address besides. The 2024 Bib Gourmand in the family belongs to Kemuri Tatsu-Ya on East 2nd, not to this room.3
Verdict
could-visit — The Tatsu-Ya group's tiki room on South Lamar, rated 8.0 by The Infatuation. The thing to order is Crab Lagoon, rangoon cheese with sweet crabmeat scooped on wonton chips with a pineapple chili jam on the side, then the poke, which runs to a sweet shrimp kinilaw with mango, toasted coconut and macadamia oil. The drinks build savoury where you would not expect it: a mai tai on Jamaican and Martinique rums with miso almond orgeat, a painkiller on shiro-miso coconut cream. The large-format theatre is the part you can skip.
