A sunken concrete bunker from 1970 on Wireless Road, surrounded by embassies and office towers, serves one of Bangkok's most praised beef green curries for about the price of the towers' coffee.
Why go
The room, per Mark Wiens, "resembles an office cafeteria" and has run unchanged for over 50 years; the Michelin snippet dates the founding to 1970 and lists it as a Bib Gourmand. The dish that travels is gaeng kiew wan nuea, the beef green curry, and the verdict Wiens records at the table is the useful kind: "Oh Mark, that's the best green curry I've had in Bangkok." Dishes run 50-100 THB, the menu rotates daily specials, and in the hot season the kitchen turns out khao chae that Time Out has tracked for decades.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the beef green curry, timed to the specials rotation (Wiens reports Thursday), with tod man pla krai and mee krob. In the hot months, the khao chae: Culinary Backstreets describes
delicate grains of rice soaked in a fragrant jasmine ice bath accompanied by a selection of meticulously prepared components.
- Avoid: Sunday, any plan after 3pm, and hunting for khao chae in the cool season. Book for a weekday noon; the office crowd fills it fast.
What locals & experts say
- Time Out Bangkok (Mar 2020, Phavitch Theeraphong):
This unpretentious establishment has been serving delicious khao chae for 40 years. Theirs is one of the cheapest in Bangkok.
2 - Culinary Backstreets (Apr 2025, Megan Leon): the khao chae line above, with hours printed Mon-Sat 9:00-15:00.1
- Michelin Guide Thailand: Bib Gourmand, editions from 2018-19 through at least 2023 per snippets; page 403s, flagged.4
- Local rec: Jeff's list: "Eater 38 rec for local food" (Eater unfetchable; kept as his provenance).
Good to know
- Timing: lunch only, Monday to Saturday, closing 3pm; opening is 9am per Culinary Backstreets (2025) against 10am in older Time Out listings. Closed Sunday.
- Booking: recommended for weekday noon (Wiens); walk-ins fine at 11am or 2pm.
- Getting there: 59/1 Witthayu Road, five minutes from BTS Phloen Chit; look down, the building sits below street level.

Verdict
should-visit — A 1970 concrete canteen in the embassy district that Michelin snippets place in the Bib Gourmand guide across multiple editions, serving a beef green curry that draws published best-in-Bangkok verdicts at 50-100 THB a plate, three hours a day, six days a week. The format cannot be replicated by a new opening; the constraint is only that lunch window. Plan a Ploenchit noon around it.
