Som Tam Jay So
The cook Time Out Bangkok crowns the "Queen of Som Tam" pounds papaya salad in a garage-front courtyard on Soi Phiphat 2, two blocks from Silom's office towers, with a charcoal barbecue running beside her all day.
Why go
This is Isaan food served without adjustment for downtown Bangkok: the som tam sua and tam pa arrive, per Time Out, "fiercely spicy, sour and fragrant with pla ra (fermented fish sauce)," the fermented funk most CBD kitchens quietly omit. Mark Wiens calls the papaya salad "green papaya salad almost exactly the way you'll find it in Isaan" and "one of the best I've had in Bangkok." Dishes ran B40-80 at Time Out's May 2026 visit, and the courtyard packs out with office workers at weekday lunch.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the charcoal-grilled chicken wings first, the dish Jeff's chef friends rate above everything else here; Time Out describes the gai yang as
charcoal-grilled chicken marinated with garlic and white pepper, the skin blistered just right.
Then the som tam sua with rice noodles, and kor moo yang, grilled pork necksliced thick and still fatty
(Time Out). - Avoid: Sunday, when it is closed, and the 12:30 lunch crush; arrive before noon for a table and the full barbecue.
What locals & experts say
- Time Out Bangkok (May 2026, Tita Honghirunkham): the cook
has earned the title 'Queen of Som Tam' for good reason,
with the salads deliveringfull northeastern Isaan flavour.
1 - AFAR (Duncan Forgan): the barbecue turns out
beautifully smoky
wings that rank amongthe stars of the show,
alongsidea winning line in other classics from northeast Thailand.
2 - Mark Wiens, Eating Thai Food: the outside looks like
little more than the front of a garage,
and the wings are marinated deeply enough that the flavor reaches the bone.3 - Local rec: Jeff's chef friends, in his note: "Chefs said the best chicken wings they had in their lives."
Good to know
- Timing: Monday to Saturday, 11am to 5:30pm (Time Out, May 2026). Closed Sunday. Daytime only; this is a lunch play, no dinner service.
- Booking: walk-in only; street tables, a patio, and the parking-lot overflow. Cheap enough to over-order.
- From voco Surawong: about 900m, a 12-minute walk via Convent Road onto Soi Phiphat 2. Eat Me sits on the same soi, so the alley covers lunch and a return trip at night.
Jeff's take (his words)
- The frame: street food restaurant that's famous for its papaya salad.
- Order: When you visit, you must order the papaya salad, but more importantly, the Thai chicken wings.
- The chef line: Chefs said the best chicken wings they had in their lives.
Verdict
should-visit — Isaan cooking with the pla ra left in, five hundred meters from the office towers, praised on the same dishes by three named writers and carrying a best-of-their-lives wings verdict from Jeff's chef network. It is a daytime-only courtyard with zero ceremony, so the rung rests on craft and value, and both are loud. You can walk there from the hotel for lunch.
