Bertie's Proper Fish & Chips
Gaby Soutar's haddock arrived as
a silky centred slab of crispy battered fish, which is the only scored review anybody has published on this kitchen.1
Why go
Soutar reviewed the Victoria Street room for The Scotsman in January 2019 and gave the food 7.5 out of 10, praising chipper chips, with the usual big fatties and skinny crunchy golden shards in attendance
alongside the haddock.1 She was equally clear about what to skip, calling the vegan fish and chips OK, if slightly bland, though don't try it if you're texturally sensitive, as the extreme soggy-ness was reminiscent of microwaved slug.
1 The menu runs wider than a chip shop's, with steak pie, mussels, chowder and curry sharing the card with the fish supper.1 In October 2025 the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards named it a finalist for Best Fish Supper in the East, one of more than 200 finalists across 25 categories.2
Good to know
- Address: 9 Victoria Street EH1 2HE, on the curve below George IV Bridge.1
- Price: the only published figures are Soutar's from January 2019: haddock and chips 10.95, the vegan version 9.95, a Scotch egg 6.50 and Bertie's fritto 12.95. Seven years old, so read them as a shape.1
- Getting there: Victoria Street runs from the Grassmarket up to George IV Bridge, five minutes from the Royal Mile.
- Hygiene: Food Hygiene Information Scheme Pass, inspected 25 September 2024, FHRSID 1106966. Twenty-three months old at the time of writing.3
- Searching the hygiene register: it files this premises as Bertie's Restaurant & Bar, not under the chip-shop trading name. Search it that way.3
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Modern chippy." That is the whole note, and it is a fair description of a fish supper served at a table in a Victoria Street restaurant.
Verdict
could-visit — Gaby Soutar reviewed this in January 2019 and gave the food 7.5 out of 10, and what she liked was the thing you would come for: a silky centred slab of crispy battered fish next to chipper chips with the big fatties and the skinny crunchy golden shards both in attendance. She was blunt about the vegan version, calling it bland and extremely soggy, so order the haddock. The Scottish Fish and Chip Awards made it a finalist for Best Fish Supper in the East in 2025, which is a shortlist among more than 200 finalists rather than a win. It sits at could-visit because the only scored review of the kitchen is seven years old, the prices in it are seven years old with it, and Jeff's own note on the row says exactly three words. Worth a Victoria Street lunch, and worth a proper look once somebody reviews it again.
