BrewDog DogHouse Edinburgh Hotel

This is the only DogHouse left in the United Kingdom. BrewDog was sold out of administration on 2 March 2026, Manchester's DogHouse went on the closure list, and this one went on the list of eleven units the buyer kept.3

Why go

The tap in the bedroom is what a room here buys you that a table downstairs does not. Five liters on draught, GBP 45 for Punk IPA, Hazy Jane or Wingman and GBP 50 for Elvis Juice, poured in your own room.6 No other room on this list has one. Each room also has a beer fridge inside the shower and a record player.9 Hannah Brown found the vinyl on hers was Scottish, Deacon Blue and the Cocteau Twins.2 The building is the old Canongate Hotel, a C-listed Victorian schoolhouse that Knight Frank had on the market at GBP 8m in 2019.4 It opened with twenty rooms on 6 December 20215, and Hannah Brown, who stayed in the first weeks, confirmed it had opened at the start of that month.2

Downstairs the offer runs about twenty-five beers on draught and eighty in can or bottle, two thirds of them BrewDog's own.10 Both bars are open to anyone off the street, so you do not need a room to drink here.9 The roof terrace with its firepits is the thing the company's other surviving Edinburgh bar on Lothian Road has not got, and it is the only part Imran Rahman-Jones had a good word for in June 2026.

Tilray Brands has owned all of it since the March sale, which kept 733 jobs across the estate through TUPE and closed thirty-eight other bars on the day.3

Order this / avoid

  • Order: the in-room tap if you are staying, and pick the beer before you pick the room, because the price follows the beer.6
  • Order: Beer School. Ninety minutes of guided tasting with cheese pairings, sold inside the GBP 125 DogHouse VIP package, with the shorter experiences starting at GBP 20.6 Hannah Brown sat it in 2022 and the woman who ran it was Phannin, who had taken BrewDog's own beer exams before she was qualified to teach, and who taught the table to sniff and taste a beer the way you would a wine.2
  • Order: a pint on the terrace on a clear evening. Imran Rahman-Jones, who liked almost nothing else about the place, allowed that There is a pleasant roof terrace where we catch the last rays of sunshine.1
  • Order: Wings Wednesday if you are here on one, unlimited buttermilk wings or beer-battered cauliflower with five sauces at GBP 17.95. Pre-book only, and it is a chain promotion that runs at the Lothian Road bar too.7
  • Avoid: cask ale. There is none, and the branch record says so in capitals.10

What locals & experts say

  • Imran Rahman-Jones, Edinburgh Pub Reviews (June 2026), the only person to write about this room since the takeover, and he is brutal about both halves of it. On the beer: Brewdog beers are still kind of serviceable, though they have lost any sort of originality or excitement they once had. On the room: Exposed pipework, long wooden benches, distressed steel joists, exposed brickwork. We've seen it all before, most other places have moved on. He finishes: Sometimes, the most humane thing is to just put the thing out of its misery.1
  • Hannah Brown, Scotland on Sunday (January 2022), stayed a night and came out the other way, on the thing she had been braced for: my fear of going to a hotel designed around craft beer was getting lectured and patronised by pretentious men with man buns and neck-beards. However, all the staff who were mainly women did a superb job in making sure the overall luxurious experience was relaxed, chill and, most importantly, accessible to all – there was no 'boys club' feel. On the food she set the bar where it belongs: Don't expect fine dining but know you will be well fed and satisfied.2
  • The two reviews are four years and one insolvency apart, and both stand because they measure different things: a hotel stay in the first weeks, and a walk-in pint under new ownership.
  • Lauren Carrol, BrewDog's chief operating officer, to the licensed trade (July 2026): Currently all beers are only available on draught in BrewDog venues. Four months after the sale the estate was still being run and still being talked about by its own management.11

Good to know

  • Sites: two BrewDog rooms still trade in Edinburgh, this one and the bar at 50 Lothian Road, which has its own entry. The Cowgate bar closed on 2 March 2026. The company's other Scottish beer hotel is in Aberdeen, opened in 2019, and it is called the Kennels, which is why neither March list has it under a DogHouse name.4
  • Booking: rooms are going by email while the operator rebuilds its booking flow, to the hotel's own address on the BrewDog domain. Bar tables book online.6
  • Access and parking: the hotel has its own open-air car park, free for Blue Badge holders, with a single designated Blue Badge bay that has to be booked ahead. A permanent slight-gradient slope on the pavement reaches the ground and first floor entrances, so both bar floors are step-free without the internal stairs. Staff will help and large print is available on request. Nobody on staff is trained in British Sign Language and no mobility aids are kept on site.8
  • Price: rooms ran GBP 145 to GBP 220 when the hotel was reviewed in January 2022, and no current rate is published anywhere. The "from GBP 165" figure on the operator's site belongs to the Manchester hotel.
  • Hours: the operator renders them in a script that never loads, and the branch record shows only a countdown, so nobody publishes them in readable form. A GBP 2 pint ran in June 2026 and has ended.
  • Non-residents: welcome in both bars, by the operator's own statement.
  • Hygiene: Food Hygiene Information Scheme Pass, inspected 1 October 2024. That is twenty-two months ago, past the point where a rating counts as current information, so the hygiene register says nothing recent about these premises either way. Treat it as a gap.12
  • Getting there: New Street runs off the Canongate, a couple of minutes from the Royal Mile and about ten from Waverley. Cadenhead's Whisky Shop and The Black Grape are both on the Canongate within a few hundred meters.

Verdict

could-visit — The reason to come is a novelty executed properly: a beer tap in the bedroom at five liters, a fridge inside the shower and a record player, in a C-listed Victorian schoolhouse. Nothing else on this list has any of that, and it is a genuine experience. The drink is not the argument. About twenty-five taps and eighty cans and bottles, two thirds of them the house brand and no cask at all, is a chain range in a chain's own hotel, and the only person to write about the room since the takeover is severe about exactly that: a registered Edinburgh critic calls the beers serviceable and stripped of what made them interesting, and the fit-out something everywhere else has moved on from. Weighing craft first, as Primacy requires, that caps this well below the Edinburgh beer rooms that buy independently. Against its own sibling on Lothian Road, which ships as a Staple, this address earns the higher rung on the room rather than the glass: the taps upstairs, the roof terrace with firepits, and a hotel proposition the bar does not have. It stays at could-visit because a warm 2022 hotel review and a hostile 2026 pub review are the whole record, no current room rate is published, and the operator's own site cannot be trusted as a signal for anything, since it still headlines a hotel that closed in March.
