The Milkman
Two coffee shops at either end of Cockburn Street, both named in the Scottish Independent Coffee Guide and both picked in the local paper's hot chocolate round-up. Both hold a failing hygiene rating from May 2026.124
Why go
The Scottish Independent Coffee Guide named both branches, listing them by address as 7 Cockburn Street and 52 Cockburn Street, when the Evening News covered the guide in December 2022.1 That listing is four years old. The paper's 2025 hot chocolate round-up puts the shops at either end of the street and repeats a claim that it was named fourth-best in the UK for hot chocolate. The piece names no award body, so that is the paper's claim and not an award.2
Good to know
- Hours: neither shop publishes them and no source prints them.
- Getting there: two shops, 7 Cockburn Street and 52 Cockburn Street, at either end of the same short street.
- Hygiene: Food Hygiene Information Scheme IMPROVEMENT REQUIRED at both premises, both inspected 21 May 2026, FHRSID 875538 at number 7 and FHRSID 1938183 at number 52, with no re-inspection pending at either as at 7 August 2026. Checking one shop's rating will not tell you about the other.4
- Not to be confused: Bun & Scoop at 21, Ecco Vino at 19 and the Arcade Bar at 48 hold their own separate Improvement Required ratings. Different operators on the same street.
Verdict
could-visit — A specialty coffee business with two shops at either end of Cockburn Street, both named in the Scottish Independent Coffee Guide when the Evening News covered it in 2022. The reason to read before you go is the register: both premises were inspected on 21 May 2026 and both came out Improvement Required, and as of August nothing is queued for either. That is a single event across a single business rather than one bad site, which is worth knowing since checking one branch would mislead you about the other. The coffee credential is real but four years old, and the hot chocolate placing the local paper cites has no award body anyone can check.
