CATCH Fish & Chips
This chip shop keeps lobster, halibut and langoustine tails on the menu next to an old-fashioned fish finger buttie, and it has a bar with Scottish craft beer and Italian sparkling wine.
Why go
The Giffnock room opened in 2014 as the original of what became three sites, with a takeaway-only shop in Netherlee in 2017 and a Gibson Street branch in 2020 that has since closed (Glasgow Foodie). The house line is light, crisp batter over fish they buy, where they can, from Scottish coastal fisheries they consider best practice, with everything fried to order (venue site). Inside there are four booths on the ground floor and a room upstairs that takes couples and large tables. The wine list runs by the 250ml glass, which is not a thing chip shops do. In 2023 the group took Best Venue in Glasgow at the first Scottish Chippy Awards, and the following year this branch was shortlisted for Best Fish Tea at the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the fish tea, since that is the specific thing the 2024 judges shortlisted2. If you want a plate rather than a tea, the panko breaded haddock came with chips piled high, mushy peas, tartare, half a lemon and a homemade pickled onion buried underneath. Each main brings a dip plus two more sauces of your choosing, including a house catch sauce and a chilli ketchup.
- Avoid: ordering two courses. Emma Mykytyn ordered mains only "as the portions are large," and the plates she describes back that up. And do not head for Gibson Street: that branch is gone.
What locals & experts say
- Glasgow Foodie (Emma Mykytyn, February 2022), whose two mains were comped and whose drinks were not:
The fish was a good size, large with a firm and crispy batter, and was flaky inside.
Her verdict,Catch delivers really filling portions of fresh seafood to a higher standard that your regular Glasgow chippy. Our fish, prawns and chips were all non-greasy.
5 - Scottish Fish and Chip Awards 2025, finalist, Best Menu. Rosalind Erskine's roster of the 25 categories lists
CATCH Fish and Chips, Glasgow
under Best Menu, and again in a West-of-Scotland regional list. That is the most recent recognition on record, and it is for the breadth of the menu rather than for the fish.4 - Scotsman Food and Drink (Sean Murphy, 2016, updated 2023), putting Catch in the city's six best chippies:
Huge pieces of freshest haddock, cod and halibut - and we mean fresh, they source and cook to order only fish from sustainable Scottish coastal fisheries - side by side with the chunkiest twice cooked chips, trust us, you'll not be disappointed.
He adds that Giffnock's Catch isanother raising the game for fish and chips,
and on the core order:Serving food that you'd expect in a high end restaurant, the humble fish and chips that is their staple take-away option hasn't been forgotten about as it's also been elevated to gourmet status.
3 - Scottish Chippy Awards 2023 (first edition), Best Venue in Glasgow: won by Catch Fish and Chips, awarded across its Netherlee, Giffnock and West End stores rather than to one branch.1
- Scottish Fish and Chip Awards 2024, Best Fish Tea:
Catch in Giffnock is a finalist in the Best Fish Tea category,
ahead of the ceremony at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Glasgow on 11 November 2024. Whether it won is not recorded.2 - On the room, from the same 2022 visit:
Catch still looks and feels new. A looked after venue.
5 - Local rec: Jeff's save. He left no note on it.
Good to know
- Hours are unverified. The venue's own site loads as a JavaScript shell and its menus page returns a not-found, so no opening times could be read. Prices quoted here are from February 2022.
- Booking: worth booking for the upstairs room. The same kitchen serves a takeaway counter.
- Getting there: Giffnock train station is a five-minute walk at most. Street parking on Fenwick Road is limited. Stagecoach 4 and First 38 services stop nearby, though some 38s turn off along Orchard Drive.
- Branches: Giffnock is the original and is a restaurant. Netherlee is takeaway only. The Gibson Street branch in the West End closed in December 2024.
- Where it actually is: Giffnock, in East Renfrewshire, outside the Glasgow city boundary.
- Hygiene: East Renfrewshire Council rates the address a Pass under the Food Hygiene Information Scheme, inspected 7 April 2026.7
Verdict
could-visit — A Fenwick Road chip shop that has been running since 2014 and behaves like a restaurant: booths downstairs, tables upstairs, a bar with Scottish craft beer and Italian and French sparkling wine, and lobster, halibut and langoustine tails on a menu that still sells a fish finger buttie. The group took Best Venue in Glasgow at the first Scottish Chippy Awards in 2023, and this branch was a Best Fish Tea finalist at the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards in 2024, so order the fish tea. The one reviewer who wrote it up found the batter firm and crispy, the fish flaky, and nothing greasy, and said the portions make a starter a mistake.
