Desi Dhaba Chaiwala
A dhaba is a roadside truck-stop kitchen and a chaiwala is the man selling the tea, so the menu here leads with breakfast breads and karak chai rather than with a curry list, and the nashta section runs all day every day.
Why go
A halal kitchen at 21 Forth Street in Pollokshields, open ten in the morning to ten at night, seven days (venue). The menu is built the way a dhaba builds one: breads get their own list, split across Breads | Paratha's | Roti's | Naan
, meat is divided into lamb and beef on one side and chicken on the other, and the tandoori specials sit apart from the dals and vegetable dishes. Thalis cover the case where you want several of those at once. The Asian Restaurant Awards named it Family Restaurant of The Year in their 2024 Scotland list, announced at the Scottish Parliament on 4 September 2024.
Order this / avoid
- Order: breakfast, whatever time you arrive. The kitchen labels the section
Desi Nashta - All Day Every Day,
which is the closest thing here to a house statement of intent2. Add karak chai, since the name over the door commits them to it. - Avoid: relying on any dish list you find on an aggregator page. The venue's own menu categories were erroring out on 2026-07-29, so the specific plates are unverified.
What locals & experts say
- Asian Restaurant Awards, 2024 Scotland winners:
Family Restaurant of The Year: Desi Dhaba Chaiwala (Glasgow),
announced at the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday 4 September 2024.3 - The programme, for scale: the same Scottish awards run regional categories including
Best Asian Restaurant (Glasgow & West),
so this is a national scheme with a Scottish tier rather than a local trophy.4 - The venue's own claim:
We are for you and all you need to do is decide what you want to eat.
Their words, and no critic in the approved register has tested them.2 - Food hygiene, checked: Pass, inspected 1 May 2024.5
- Local rec: Jeff's save, "Multiple awards 2023/2024." One of those is pinned above.
Good to know
- Timing: 10:00 to 22:00, every day. Breakfast is not restricted to the morning.
- Booking: walk-in. Delivery and collection run through the venue's own apps.
- Getting there: Forth Street sits between Pollokshields East and Shields Road, a short walk from either, and about ten minutes from the Southside end of the city center by train.
- Dietary: the venue displays halal certification on its own site. Allergies should be declared before ordering, per the venue's own notice.

Verdict
could-visit — A halal Pollokshields dhaba running desi nashta all day and closing at ten every night, named Family Restaurant of the Year 2024 by the Asian Catering Federation at a Scottish Parliament ceremony. That is a real award from a named body with a date attached, and the format, breakfast breads and chai from a kitchen calling itself a chaiwala, is a genuine thing to eat in Glasgow's Southside. It stays at could-visit because no critic has assessed the cooking, no prices or signature dishes are pinned, and a family-restaurant category award speaks to the room more than to the food.
