Glengoyne Distillery
The Highland line runs straight through the property, so the spirit is distilled in the Highlands and carried across the road to mature in the Lowlands.
Why go
Whisky people argue about stills and this is a distillery you can argue about usefully. All three stills carry boil bulbs, the wash and spirit are heated gently, and fermentation runs up to 56 hours, so copper contact and reflux are pushed hard and the new make comes out gentle, sweet, and fruity
(Scotchwhisky.com). The malt is specified at 0ppm, which means no smoke is available to cover anything up. The house cask policy is ex-sherry butts, described by the same source as a signature of Edrington's distilleries
that Ian Macleod kept when it bought the place in 2003 for GBP 7.2 million. There has been a licensed still on this site since 1833, first as Burnfoot, then Glen Guin, and Glengoyne only from 1905.
Order this / avoid
- Buy: Cask Strength, batch numbered and un-chillfiltered, for the sherry without an age statement smoothing it. The 21 Year Old is the deep end of the standard range. The 25 and 30 Year Old come out for the Fine and Rare tasting rather than the bar.
- Do: the Malt Master if you have an afternoon. You blend your own cask strength single malt from single casks in the Sample Room and go home with a 200ml bottle and a written record of the recipe, and the trade says
you cannot book this experience anywhere else in Scotland
(Distillery Tours Scotland). The Spirit of Glengoyne goes further, into the dunnage warehouses and a cask you draw yourself. - Avoid: driving if you came to taste, and arriving unbooked. The Fine and Rare and the Tasting Experience skip the distillery walk entirely, so read which one you are buying.

- On the "slowest stills in Scotland" line: that is Glengoyne's own marketing and it is treated as a claim. What an independent source will say is "extremely slow", with the mechanism attached.
- No named whisky writer found. Whisky Magazine and the Scottish drinks desks were searched on 30 July 2026 and no bylined assessment of the distillery came back.
Good to know
- Where: Dumgoyne, near Killearn, G63 9LB, at the foot of the Campsies. This is Stirling council area, not Glasgow.
- Getting there: the number 10 from Buchanan Bus Station, direction Balfron, stops at the gates. Forty minutes by car. Eight miles from Milngavie if you are walking the West Highland Way.
- Timing: seven days, 10am to 5pm. Book ahead, since every experience runs on a timed schedule.
- Money: the base Tour and Tasting is GBP 20 for an hour and a quarter and two drams. The ladder runs to GBP 225 for the half day.
- Dogs: outdoors only, shop and tasting rooms included, because it is a working distillery.
- Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme records a Pass for the distillery, rating date 10 June 2025, and a Pass for the bar and shop, rating date 23 February 2021. Both under Stirling Council.4
Verdict

The craft case is specific and it comes from a whisky specialist rather than the brand. Fermentations run up to 56 hours, all three stills carry boil bulbs and the wash and spirit are heated gently, so copper contact and reflux are pushed as far as the kit allows and the new make lands gentle, sweet and fruity. The malt is 0ppm, so nothing is hiding behind smoke, and the house cask policy is ex-sherry butts inherited from Edrington and kept by Ian Macleod since 2003. Then there is the thing you cannot do elsewhere: on the Malt Master you blend your own cask strength single malt in the Sample Room and leave with a 200ml bottle and the recipe. Depth is the axis here rather than rotation, which is how whisky should be judged. It goes to the top rung on craft and on that experience, with the awards eight years stale and no named critic on the record, which is why confidence sits at medium rather than high.
