Lazord Syrian Street Food
Glasgow's shawarma specialist gave this counter 7 out of 10 and was defeated by the wrap for the wrong reason: the Arabic special is more bread than salad, so the regular one is the better order.
Why go
Lazord cooks Syrian, which in a Glasgow kebab scene built by Kurdish, Turkish, Iraqi and Afghan kitchens is its own thing. The menu is short, "shawarma wraps, Syrian sides and some grilled chicken", and the room is small enough that turning up at Saturday lunchtime means eating it on the street (Shawarma Police). The lamb is the detail worth knowing: where Glasgow shawarma tends salty, this runs sweeter, which the reviewer called "a different, but not unpleasant, taste". The chips go in under the meat and come out seasoned properly. Location does a lot of work here, because it sits on the quiet street behind Matalan, two minutes from St Enoch subway and five from Central, which makes it a lunch stop rather than a destination. One thing to weigh before you go, in the same breath as the rest: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme rated the premises Improvement Required in October 2025 and that is still the rating in force (FSA register).
Order this / avoid
- Order: lamb shawarma in the regular wrap. The specialist's own conclusion after eating the upgrade was "sometimes less is more" ref. Take the garlic mayo for the chips rather than the wrap.
- Avoid: the Arabic special. It is enormous, it is short on salad, and it eats dry.
What locals & experts say
- Shawarma Police (willmill82), August 2018, scored 7/10: "this was some of the nicest shawarma I have had in a long time." ref
- The same review's criticism, which is the useful half: "The wrap was more wrap than vegetables, it has to be said. Salad + sauce keeps it juicy, and had there been more juice, I could have forced myself over the finish line." ref
- Absent from both of the city's kebab rankings. GlasgowWorld's 2023 top ten was compiled by the same Shawarma Police, and its 2025 top eight runs Shawarma King, Shawarma Grill, Istanbul Turkish Kebab House, Hajar Shawarma, Kebabish, BBQ.WRAP.SALAD, 'BABS and Kurdish Street Food. Every page of both was read on 30 July 2026 and Lazord is in neither. ref
- No approved title has covered it. The Skinny, Glasgowist, The Glasgow Bell, the Glasgow Times food desk, The Herald and The List were searched on 30 July 2026 and none names it.
- Jeff's own signal: he flagged Lazord as ranking too low. That is recorded as a ranking instruction, not as a report of a meal, and it is why this row exists at all.
Good to know
- Hygiene, stated plainly: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme rates this premises Improvement Required, the failing tier of the Scottish scheme, from an inspection on 13 October 2025 (FHRSID 1875738, Glasgow City Council). It was still in force on 30 July 2026, which makes it current information. The row stays with the finding attached, and this is not where to send someone first. ref
- Where: 33 Howard Street, G1 4BA, on the quiet side street behind Matalan off St Enoch Square. Two minutes from St Enoch subway, five from Glasgow Central.
- Seating: limited, and it fills at lunchtime. Plan on a takeaway.
- Payment, unconfirmed: several listings say cards are not accepted. No citable source and no venue channel confirms it, so carry cash and check.
- Halal, unconfirmed: a Muslim community directory carries the venue, which is not the same as the kitchen stating a halal position. No dietary flag is recorded here for that reason.
- No website. Everything that looks like one is a generated listing page rather than the venue's own channel.
Jeff's take (his words)
Nothing on the food. What he has said about this row is a ranking instruction, that Lazord should sit higher than it does, logged on 30 July 2026 with his own caveat that confidence stays low until somebody curates it. That is treated here as the signal it is.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
could-visit — A small Syrian shawarma counter on the quiet side of St Enoch, two minutes from the subway, working a short menu of wraps, Syrian sides and grilled chicken. The one specialist who has assessed it scored it 7/10 and called it 'some of the nicest shawarma I have had in a long time', with lamb that runs sweeter than the salty Glasgow standard, and marked it down for a specific and useful reason: the big Arabic special is more bread than salad and eats dry. That is the whole published record on the cooking, and it is from 2018. Two things hold it here rather than higher. Lazord is absent from both of GlasgowWorld's kebab rankings, including the one compiled by the same specialist who scored it, in the city with the deepest kebab field in Scotland. And the Food Hygiene Information Scheme has rated the premises Improvement Required since October 2025, which is current. Jeff has said it should rank higher, and it now does, from nothing to a real entry. Getting it further needs a current review and a clean re-inspection.
