Mesa
A Sardinian chef cooking Glasgow brunch on Duke Street, in the room that was the French cafe C'est la Vie until the first week of January 2019.
Why go
Laurie MacMillan built Cafe Strange Brew in Shawlands into the room Julie Lin calls her number one cafe, crediting her with starting this amazing brunch scene that now exists in the Southside
(The Glasgow Wrap). Mesa is what she did with that in the East End, opened on 19 February 2019 with chef Andrea Bartolini in the kitchen. Paul Trainer watched the old C'est la Vie sign come down and described what to expect as a strong brunch game, gourmet sandwiches, coffee and cakes
, then came back on opening day for the hot lamb two egg skillet (Glasgowist). The room is small, bright and stone-walled, with a Tom Waits print on it, carrying design cues from Shawlands while working a different neighborhood. One thing to know in the same breath: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme has rated the premises Improvement Required since October 2025 (FSA register).
Order this / avoid
- Order: the hot lamb skillet under two eggs, thick-cut sourdough with halloumi, and pancakes if the sweet thing of the day appeals. Glasgowist listed the building blocks:
Thick chunks of sourdough. Slabs of halloumi. Expertly poached eggs.
1 - Avoid: planning an evening around it. This is a daytime counter, and the wine-and-records room some listings imply does not exist here.
What locals & experts say
- Paul Trainer, Glasgowist, on opening day, 19 February 2019:
A compact, bright space with bare stone walls adorned with prints, including an eye-catching one of Tom Waits. There are design cues from its Southside sister cafe, but Mesa will now be able to establish its own identity in the East End.
On the food that day:Day one and it's a strong start.
This is opening coverage, and it is treated as such.1 - The same writer, six weeks earlier, placing it in a field: Mesa
will join the local breakfast club that includes Coia's Cafe, Tibo, East Coffee Company and Scran on Alexandra Parade.
2 - Julie Lin, chef and co-owner of Ga Ga Kitchen + Bar, in Glasgow's industry guide, on the group's first room and not on this one:
My number one cafe has to be my friend Laurie Macmillan's Cafe Strange Brew. She started up this amazing brunch scene that now exists in the Southside of the city and it's remained brilliant ever since.
3 - Nothing since February 2019. The Skinny, The Glasgow Bell, the Glasgow Times food desk and The List were searched on 30 July 2026 and none has assessed the cooking here.
Good to know
- Hygiene, stated plainly: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme rates this premises Improvement Required, the failing tier of the Scottish scheme, from an inspection on 29 October 2025 (FHRSID 1855387, Glasgow City Council). Still in force on 30 July 2026, so treat it as current.5
- Where: 567 Duke Street, G31 1PY, in the middle of the Dennistoun run.
- Timing: daytime only. It opened at 9am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday and current hours could not be confirmed from any citable channel, so check before a late arrival.
- The group: Cafe Strange Brew in Shawlands came first, this is the East End room, and Sister Midnight on King Street is the newest. Three sites, one owner.
- Not the wine bar. Another entry on this site points people here for wine and records. That is a mistake and it is being corrected; Mesa is a brunch cafe.
- Not La Mesa on Dumbarton Road in Partick, which is a different business with its own hygiene record.
Verdict
could-visit — A Sardinian chef cooks brunch in a small bright room on Duke Street, in the unit that was the French cafe C'est la Vie until the first week of 2019. Laurie MacMillan opened it as the East End sibling of Cafe Strange Brew, the Shawlands room that Julie Lin credits with starting the Southside brunch scene, and it is the middle venue of a three-site independent that now also runs Sister Midnight on King Street. The food is thick-cut sourdough, halloumi, poached eggs done properly and a hot lamb skillet under two eggs. That lineage is the reason to go, and it is also the limit of the evidence, because nobody citable has assessed the cooking since the week it opened in February 2019. The Food Hygiene Information Scheme has rated the premises Improvement Required since October 2025, which is current and belongs in the same sentence as the recommendation. Worth a stop if you are in Dennistoun before mid-afternoon. Not a reason to cross the city, and not a first send.
