Perch & Rest Coffee

Best coffee, just go.

Jeff's note

Perch & Rest Cafe

It started as a cafe in 2018 and turned itself into a specialty coffee retail store with a bar attached in 2020, which is why the wall behind you holds more European roasters than the menu does drinks.

Why go

The bar is multi-roaster, so there is no house blend to defend and the filter rotates through roasteries from Scotland and across Europe. The retail side is the reason to plan a stop rather than pass through: high-end lots are sold by the cup, so you can taste an expensive coffee before buying a bag of it, and the refill station takes your own container from 100g up. Grinders, kettles, scales and brewers fill the shelves. The room sits on Otago Street between the university and Kelvinbridge, and the pavement tables catch the student traffic between lectures.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: whatever guest roaster is on filter, then a cup of the most expensive thing on the shelf, which Experience Glasgow notes is the point of the by-the-cup range, "a range of high-end coffees that you can purchase by the cup." Bring a jar if you want to refill. ref
  • Avoid: planning lunch around it. The counter cabinet runs to cakes and pastries, and the door shuts at five.

What locals & experts say

  • Independent Coffee Guide Scotland, sixth edition (2022): one of 12 Glasgow venues selected, described by Glasgowist as "a bright and airy Aladdin's cave of speciality coffee delights, it's packed with all manner of kit to help visitors recreate the magic at home." ref
  • Experience Glasgow (coffee trail): "This wee West End nook is a multi-roaster cafe... They supply West End-ers with a large selection of well known, renowned coffee roasters from all over Europe." ref
  • European Coffee Trip: carried in the Glasgow city guide alongside 1841, Ottoman Coffeehouse and Papercup. ref
  • Local rec: Jeff's save, his note below, and it is the shortest verdict on his Glasgow list. REAL.

Good to know

  • Timing: 9 to 5 Monday to Friday, 9:30 to 5 Saturday, 10 to 5 Sunday. Every day ends at five.
  • Booking: walk-in. It is one small room, so peak hours mean standing or taking a pavement table.
  • Getting there: 39 Otago Street, two minutes from Kelvinbridge subway and around the corner from Gibson Street.

Jeff's take (his words)

  • Note: "Best coffee, just go."

Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)

should-visit — Worth the detour if coffee is the reason you are out. A multi-roaster bar attached to a retail wall of European roasters, selling high-end single origins by the cup so you can taste before you commit to a bag, and refilling your own container from 100g. It was one of 12 Glasgow venues in the sixth edition of the Independent Coffee Guide Scotland. Jeff's verdict is the shortest one on his list and the least hedged, and the format backs it. It stops short of must-visit because it shuts at five and the food is a pastry cabinet.

Order

  • Whatever guest roaster is on filter that week; the bar is multi-roaster and rotates
  • A high-end single origin bought by the cup rather than the bag
  • A refill from the retail wall, from 100g up, in your own container

Good to know

  • Booking: walk-in
  • Timing: morning-only, closes-early, all-day
  • Best for: breakfast, solo, quick
  • Avoid: Coming after 5pm. It shuts at five every day and it is a coffee bar, not an evening room
