Why go

This is the original Cottonrake counter, on the corner of Great Western Road and Bank Street, trading since 2013 and now the source for three sites (Time Out). The shop bakes to a clock rather than to a menu. Breakfast pastries and filled croissants go out first, savoury tarts and rolls with pork shoulder and Stornoway black pudding land mid-morning, and the lunch baguettes and sandwiches are built on the shop's own sourdough and spelt, which you can also buy as loaves. Malcolm Jack scored it four out of five for Time Out in 2014 and called it a stylish fusion of classic British Bakery and French patisserie. Twelve years on the venue describes itself the same way, as a local independent bakery in Glasgow's West End (venue). The catering arm is a brochure and an enquiry form run off this same counter.

Order this / avoid

• Order: the Ayrshire ham and Gruyere baguette. Jamie Dunn's account of it is the reason to make the trip: A savoury bomb of cured ham hits first, followed by the mellow, nutty tanginess of the creamy Gruyere and the slightest kick of mustard, but it's the bread that takes this to a higher plain2. Add a custard tart. Come mid-morning if you want the savoury tarts.
• Avoid: late afternoon, when the shelves have gone. And do not plan to eat here. Twelve seats, and Kelvingrove Park is four minutes downhill.

• Which door: 497 Great Western Road, G12 8HL, at Bank Street in Kelvinbridge. This is the bakery counter. Cottonrake Cafe, the sit-in brunch room with an evening licence, is 717 Great Western Road up by Oran Mor, and a third Cottonrake kitchen produces at 35 Commerce Street on the south side.
• Timing: 8am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm Sunday as printed in August 2024. Weekend late morning is the queue.
• Booking: walk-in, and there is nothing to book. About twelve seats between the window stools and the bench outside.
• Pairing: I.J. Mellis is at 492 and Roots, Fruits & Flowers is opposite at 455. Cheese, fruit and a baguette makes the Botanics picnic in one block.

Verdict

should-visit — The baguette is the argument, and someone with a byline made it better than a database can. Jamie Dunn calls the Ayrshire ham and Gruyere on Cottonrake's sourdough baguette one of the best food experiences any Scottish establishment has to offer, and the reason is structural: the crust is fierce enough that you have to slow down and eat it properly. Time Out gave the counter four stars in 2014 for a fusion of British bakery and French patisserie, so the standard is thirteen years old and holding. The shop bakes to a clock rather than to a menu, breakfast pastries first, savoury tarts with Stornoway black pudding mid-morning, loaves in sourdough and spelt, and the shelves empty as they fill, which is why the queue was halfway down Bank Street on a Saturday. It stops short of must-visit because it is a takeaway counter with twelve seats and no kitchen making its own case, and because nobody reachable has named the baker.
