Cottonrake Cafe
The Skinny called Cottonrake's ham and Gruyere baguette "a sourdough baguette so crispy it hurts," and this is the address where you can sit down with one.
Why go
Cottonrake has baked in the West End for twelve years by its own count, running a bakery, a wholesale and catering arm, and now this cafe at the Botanic Gardens end of Great Western Road (venue). The house style is slow-fermented sourdough alongside French patisserie work, which Time Out scored four stars back in 2014 when the counter was the whole business. The cafe serves that same output as breakfast and all-day brunch, and it has been trading here since at least October 2023, when Glasgow City Council first inspected it. In 2025 the operation won planning permission to run to 11pm and a licence to pour, so there is now an evening small-plates menu with wine and cocktails (Glasgow World).
Order this / avoid
- Order: a baguette sandwich, where the bread does the work. On the ham and Gruyere, The Skinny wrote that
a savoury bomb of cured ham hits first, followed by the mellow, nutty tanginess of the creamy Gruyere and the slightest kick of mustard, but it's the bread that takes this to a higher plain
1. Add a custard tart. The savory tarts run to pork shoulder and Stornoway black pudding2. - Avoid: navigating to 497 Great Western Road, which is the original Cottonrake bakery counter at Kelvinbridge and a different room entirely.
What locals & experts say
- The Skinny (Jamie Dunn, August 2024): the baguette and custard tarts together make
a world-class picnic.
1 - Time Out Glasgow (Malcolm Jack, 2014, four stars, on the bakery):
a stylish fusion of classic British Bakery and French patisserie.
2 - Glasgow World (2025): reported the cafe as a
popular brunch spot
granted permission to open till 11pm and serve alcohol with an evening menu.3 - Local rec: Jeff's own save, and he rates the breakfast possibly the best in Glasgow.
Good to know
- Timing: breakfast onward, all day, with the 2025 permission running to 11pm and an evening menu attached. Check Maps for the current close.
- Booking: walk-in. Jeff's note allows for a queue, and weekend late morning is the crush.
- Hygiene: Food Hygiene Information Scheme Pass, Glasgow City Council, inspected 9 October 2023 (FHRSID 1648766). The bakery at 497 Great Western Road holds a Pass inspected 25 June 2026.5
- Which site: 717 Great Western Road, at the top of Byres Road by Oran Mor. The Kelvinbridge address belongs to the older bakery.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Exceptionally good breakfast and brunch featuring homemade sourdough and beautiful baked goods. Possibly the best in Glasgow. Worth the trek and queue (if needed)."
- The verdict: "Exceptionally good breakfast and brunch featuring homemade sourdough and beautiful baked goods. Possibly the best in Glasgow. Worth the trek and queue (if needed)."
Verdict
should-visit — The baking is the argument. Cottonrake has spent more than a decade on slow-fermented sourdough and French pastry work out of a West End corner shop, and this room is where that output gets a plate, a coffee and a table. The Skinny's line about the baguette is the kind of judgment a baker earns rather than buys, and Time Out gave the counter four stars back in 2014, so the standard is not new. It stays under must-visit because the cafe is a second outlet for someone else's bake rather than a kitchen making its own case, and no critic has reviewed this address yet.
