Steven Turner turned a betting office under the railway bridge on London Road into a gallery that takes no commission from the artists it shows, then built a bakery, a kitchen and a coffee bar around it.

Why go

The 2021 planning application described the project as one that looks to extend Glasgow's creative scene to the doorstep of the Calton area, linking the Merchant City with the neighbouring East End, which is exactly where it sits (Scottish Construction Now). Turner came from running arts venues, says plainly that he is neither baker nor chef, and hires people he then leaves alone, which is why the counter changes and the standard does not (Glasgow World). The Good Food Guide rates it a Local Gem and notes that the same room becomes a BYOB restaurant Thursday through Sunday evenings (The Good Food Guide). Condé Nast Traveller named it on its UK top new restaurants list. The attached run club has raised money for East End charities, £12,000 in one effort.

Order this / avoid

• Order: the maritozzi, the Roman cream-filled bun the Good Food Guide calls the house special, or the beef-shin toastie enriched with melting smoked Cheddar with fennel jam1. For pastry, Peter Simpson picked the cardamom and custard buns, Sweet, light, fragrant, and covered in a crystalline wall of sugar2. At night, the oysters and the Southern-style fried chicken with gravy and greens.
• Avoid: planning dinner here on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Evening service runs Thursday to Sunday and wants a booking. Bring your own bottle, because they will not sell you one.

• The Skinny (Peter Simpson, 2022): the pastry is robust, flavourful and flecked with grain when you rip it apart, and the broccoli and courgette galette is simultaneously crumbly and puffy, and piled up with roasted veg.2

• Booking: walk in during the day, book for evenings. BYOB at dinner.
• Getting there: 38 London Road, east of the Saltmarket at Glasgow Cross, under the railway bridge and a two-minute walk from Merchant City. Argyle Street and High Street stations are both close.

Verdict

must-visit — Plan around it, and go while it is still moving. Two independent industry voices name it and both talk about the same thing: weekend pop-ups now and a wine-bar format coming. That is a room visibly changing shape, attested by practitioners rather than claimed by the venue, and it compounds with a kitchen already worth the trip.
