The Gate
A pub has held a licence at 251 Gallowgate since James Reid took the lease in 1826, and the bar there now keeps more than 160 whiskies behind it, directly across the road from the Barrowland Ballroom.
Why go
Andy Gemmell opened it in 2019 after a drinks-trade career spanning bartending, brand ambassadorship and consulting, on a site previously known as The Emerald Isle. That background shows in how the list is run: six house cocktails rotating monthly at launch, twelve on the board now, all built in-house rather than bought in. In March 2026 the team replaced the whole thing with Tales of the Gallowgate, a menu written out of the street's own history, which SLTN reported as drawing on its characters, culture and chaos
(SLTN). The Robot honors a local street performer and runs Haku vodka, Midori, manzanilla sherry, pandan and pineapple brine. One drink is a margarita cut with chili oil carried in from Ho Lee Fook next door. Alongside all of that sit 30 gins, craft beer and Tennent's.
Order this / avoid
- Order: whatever is newest off Tales of the Gallowgate, then a dram from the 160-bottle wall. The Robot is the one to ask for if you want to see how far the builds go.1
- Avoid: planning dinner here. Food is toasties and snacks. Also check the day, because the doors stay shut Monday and Tuesday.
What locals & experts say
- Dave Broom, Scotch Whisky:
If you want that pint of Tennent's then have it; if you want a cocktail, that's okay as well. No rules, no airs or graces.
He wrote the street's history as high-class joints, then dives, and then this:The Gate's arrival shifts this paradigm.
He also placed it in company, alongsidethe Ben Nevis in Finnieston, the Lismore in Partick, the Pot Still and Bon Accord in the town centre, and the nearby Scotia as a great Glasgow whisky pub.
3 - SLTN (2026): on the new list, Gemmell said
251 Gallowgate has been bringing people together for generations, and that means something to us.
1 - SLTN (2019), on opening: Gemmell's line was
Having the best food and drink means nothing unless you have the people that can make our guests feel great.
2 - Glasgow Bar Awards 2025: carried on the Best Bar longlist, voting closing 2 February 2025. No win confirmed in the sources reached.6
- Local rec: Jeff's save and his top Glasgow cocktail pick, his words below.
Good to know
- Timing: the last schedule the bar published ran Wednesday to Friday from 4pm and Saturday and Sunday from 2pm, closing at midnight, with Monday and Tuesday shut. Its website has since expired and nobody republishes the hours, so treat those as the shape of the week and check the Maps pin on the day.
- Booking: recommended, walk-ins taken. Gig nights at the Barrowland fill it fast.
- Getting there: 251 Gallowgate, straight across from the Barrowland Ballroom and a few minutes from the Barras, so it works either side of a show.
Craft signals (cocktails: rotation plus a dated menu)
Two signals, both drink-side. The list rotates and the 2026 card was written out of Barras and Gallowgate history, which is a dated menu launch rather than a standing card. The peer vote is the second: 43rd in the UK Top 50 for 2025 on the strength of innovative takes on classics, then off the 2026 list7. The 1826 licence and the Barrowland across the road are the room, not the glass, and they sit in Experience.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Arguably the best cocktail bar in Glasgow, one of the best in Scotland."
Verdict
should-visit — Worth the detour, and Jeff supplies the strongest evidence on the board: he calls it arguably the best cocktail bar in Glasgow. The whisky wall and the house list make the case for a detour without quite proving the crown. RE-TESTED 2026-08-01 after the venue site expired, and the rung is unchanged because nothing it stood on came from that site. It now rests on Jeff first-hand, on SLTN's two dated reports of a 160-bottle whisky wall and a house list rebuilt in March 2026 out of two centuries of Gallowgate history, and on Dave Broom in Scotch Whisky, read this pass at his own publisher, who wrote that 'The Gate's arrival shifts this paradigm' and filed the bar alongside the Ben Nevis, the Lismore, the Pot Still and the Bon Accord as a great Glasgow whisky pub. Held at should-visit rather than higher because no marquee win is pinned, the food stops at toasties, and the room has lost the site that published its hours.
