The Absent Ear
A basement speakeasy named for the ear Van Gogh lost, hidden in Merchant City behind an unmarked buzzer, and you only get the street address when you book; the team behind it took SLTN Cocktail Bar of the Year in 2023.
Why go
Owner Michael Woods, whose Glasgow group includes The Amsterdam and Saint Luke's and The Winged Ox, runs it with chief creative Liam Grogan, SLTN's Mixologist of the Year in 2022. The bar placed No. 26 on the UK Top 50 Cocktail Bars in 2022 and climbed to No. 25 in 2023, the year it also took SLTN Cocktail Bar of the Year and reached the GQ Best Bar UK final. The list rotates constantly and commissions Glasgow artists into the drinks themselves: Sophie Rowan's artwork became the strawberry-and-Diplomatico Fragola-Rama, Rory Kennedy's the Two & a Choux.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the newest drink on the list, since the menu is built to turn over, or the Fragola-Rama if it is on. The list site calls the venue
a speakeasy-style venue offering a strong menu and fun vibes.
2 - Avoid: wandering Merchant City looking for a sign. There is none; book, get the address, find the buzzer.
What locals & experts say
- SLTN Awards (2023): Cocktail Bar of the Year, per the venue's awards page, alongside UK Top 50 Cocktail Bars No. 25 (2023) and No. 26 (2022).1
- Top 50 Cocktail Bars:
Inspired by late artist Vincent Van Gogh, Glasgow's Absent Ear cocktail bar is a speakeasy-style venue offering a strong menu and fun vibes.
2 - Glasgow Foodie (2022): owner Michael Woods on the Top 50 debut:
Very proud of what our team has achieved. This is just the start of things to come.
3 - Local rec: Jeff's save, his note below.
Good to know
- Timing: open late; Jeff flags it as a late-night option.
- Booking: recommended, and doubly useful here since the confirmation carries the address.
- Pair it: Jeff's list keeps The Gate in the East End as his benchmark Glasgow cocktail bar; the two make a night.
Craft signals (cocktails: rotation and house ingredient work)
Two drink-side signals. The UK Top 50 guide describes the list as continuously rotating, with a fresh set of drinks worth checking on each visit, and dates the current menu as two years of development under chief creative Liam Grogan2. The second is the ingredient work behind the rotation, cubed strawberry and coconut, birch caramel and a pastry cream foam, which is R&D rather than a reprinted card. Worth knowing that the peer vote moved against it: 33rd in the 2025 UK Top 50 and off the 2026 list entirely.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "A solid cocktail bar from top mixologists. Open late. Consider reservations."
Verdict
should-visit — Worth the detour on the strength of the award shelf: SLTN Cocktail Bar of the Year 2023 is a national industry-peer prize, backed by consecutive UK Top 50 placements (No. 26 in 2022, No. 25 in 2023) and an SLTN Mixologist of the Year on the team. The Van Gogh conceit and the address-on-booking theater are footnotes; the peer recognition is the rung. Held short of anything higher because Jeff calls it 'solid' rather than singular, and no independent critic has written the drinks up in detail.
