The Caravan Shop

The wine bar in the basement pours through a Coravin, so it can sell a glass from a bottle it never opens, and it stocks wines that never come upstairs.

Why go

This was Brett's storage unit, and it housed Cail Bruich while that restaurant was being rebuilt. Cultar Restaurant Group, run by the brothers Paul and Chris Charalambous since 2006, opened it as a bar on 2 May 2025 (Glasgow Live). In November 2025 they added Cellar underneath, with Christopher R. Brewer running that list, Alan Doig as head chef and Colin Anderson as chef director across the group (DRAM Scotland). Upstairs runs all day with small plates and a Friday-to-Sunday breakfast. Downstairs is low light, wine crates, a 19th-century mahogany cabinet full of tasting glassware and a vinyl collection.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: a Coravin pour in Cellar, which DRAM describes as selected bottles and by-the-glass pours, including Coravin-served wines and Cellar exclusives not available upstairs2. To eat with it, the Cantabrian anchovy gildas or the beef tartare with house crisps and pickles. Upstairs, the mac and cheese waffles with pickled onions and parsley are the odd one on the snack list and the one people remember.
  • Avoid: planning around a reservation. The venue takes none, and it is closed on Mondays.

What locals & experts say

  • No independent review exists. Fifteen months open and nobody with a byline has assessed the list.
  • The Caravan Shop team, on Instagram, quoted by Glasgow Live (Sean Murphy, 28 April 2025): The Caravan Shop will be a wine bar, eatery and bottle shop — somewhere to grab a drink or snack before or after Brett, somewhere to come if you miss when Brett was a bar, somewhere for a pint in the sun, or to pick up a bottle to take home.1
  • DRAM Scotland (5 Nov 2025), on the kitchen's role downstairs: the food is snacks, charcuterie and cheese designed to pair with the wine offering, which is a fair description of a room built around bottles rather than plates.2

Craft signals (wine: preservation buys a wider glass list)

Two signals, both already sourced above. The venue's own site pitches the upstairs room as a seasonal small plate's menu—perfect for sharing with friends over a bottle of wine, our house negroni, or a refreshing summer spritz3, and DRAM's November 2025 piece describes the Cellar as selected bottles and by-the-glass pours, including Coravin-served wines and Cellar exclusives not available upstairs2. Argon preservation is the mechanism that lets a twenty-one-seat room keep serious bottles open by the glass, which is depth reached through kit rather than churn. Seasonal is the fair label: the plates turn with the year and the glass list turns with what the group buys.

Good to know

  • Timing: Tuesday to Thursday 4pm to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 11pm, Sunday 10am to 9pm, as posted by the venue in July 2026. Closed Monday. Breakfast Friday to Sunday from 10am.
  • Booking: walk-ins only. Cellar can be taken privately for ten.
  • Price: at opening a spritz was GBP 7, a pint of Guinness GBP 4.50 and aperitivo snacks GBP 1.50. Those are May 2025 numbers.
  • Where: 364 Great Western Road, a short walk from Brett and from Inn Deep at Kelvinbridge.
  • Bottle shop: it opened as one, selling bottles to take away. The current site does not advertise retail, so ask before counting on it.
  • Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme lists the premises as awaiting its first inspection, recorded 25 July 2025.4

Verdict

should-visit — The Caravan Shop is worth the detour. Jeff (first-hand, 2026-07-30) puts it level with Corner Shop as his third send in Glasgow, and the entry was under-ruled at could-visit. A wine shop-bar of the kind the city was short of: a list bought with a point of view, drunk in or taken away. Needs a deeper research pass to do the buying programme justice.

Order

  • Coravin pours and Cellar-only bottles in the wine bar downstairs
  • Cantabrian anchovy gildas
  • Beef tartare with house crisps and pickles
  • Mac and cheese waffles with pickled onions and parsley
  • Aperitivo hour, when the snacks and the spritz are priced to keep you in the chair

At a glance

  • Booking: walk-in
  • Timing: all day, breakfast, open late, closed mon, no bookings
  • Best for: drinks, lunch, breakfast, solo, date, quick
