Nowita Ice Cream
The milk and cream come from Mossgiel Farm, the organic Ayrshire dairy, and Jamie and Jill churned at home for two years before opening the Hyndland Street shop in summer 2022.
Why go
The shop makes its own inclusions rather than buying them in, so the salted caramel, the Italian meringue and the chocolate honeycomb going through the machine were all cooked on site. Production runs in small batches with no artificial flavorings, colorings or preservatives, and the pair state their approach as "all fresh...no crap." Most of what goes in beyond the dairy comes from local independent suppliers and farms. The board turns over constantly, which is why The List described the place as one "where complementary flavours are everything" when it named Nowita one of five great ice cream joints in Glasgow in June 2025. There is a dog version too.
Order this / avoid
- Order: whatever is new on the board that week. The List's snapshot of the range ran from rum and raisin through matcha and caramel to a vegan blueberry cheesecake.1
- Avoid: arriving set on one flavor. The flavors rotate, so the thing you had last month may not be there.
What locals & experts say
- The List (June 2025): Jay Thundercliffe and David Kirkwood on the sourcing,
Mossgiel Farm in Ayrshire provides the milk and cream for this contemporary outfit where complementary flavours are everything.
1 - The venue: states there are
absolutely no artificial flavourings, colourings or preservatives
in the ice cream, and that it makes the inclusions in house.2 - Local rec: Jeff's save, and his own verdict below, which goes further than any published source here.
Good to know
- Timing: a small daytime-into-evening counter. Nobody publishes current hours, so check before a special trip.
- Booking: walk-in, one counter, queues on a warm day.
- Getting there: 51 Hyndland Street, a couple of minutes off Dumbarton Road in Partick and walkable from Kelvinhall subway.
- Hygiene: FSA/FHIS Pass, inspected 9 April 2025.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Some of the best ice cream in Scotland"
Verdict
should-visit — Worth the detour if you are anywhere near Byres Road, and Jeff makes the strongest claim on the board: some of the best ice cream in Scotland. Everything behind the counter belongs to a real craft operation rather than a franchise. Milk and cream come from Mossgiel, the Ayrshire organic dairy, the inclusions are cooked in house down to the Italian meringue and the honeycomb, and the pair behind it spent two years churning at home before taking a shop in 2022. Held at should-visit because no tasted review or award has been pinned, and the board rotates, so what you get depends on the week.
