Ox and Finch
Jonathan MacDonald cooked for the McLaren Formula One team before he opened Ox and Finch in 2014, and Michelin has given the room a Bib Gourmand every year since.
Why go
MacDonald came out of McLaren and Absolute Taste, kitchens judged on feeding a lot of people to a fixed standard on a fixed clock, and that is the discipline Ox and Finch runs on (Michelin). The menu holds around thirty small plates that change with the season, sent from a tile-backed open kitchen in a converted Victorian tenement corner that was refurbished in 2024 (The Good Food Guide). Michelin's listing credits skilful use of simple ingredients
in dishes big enough for sharing
(Michelin). The group behind it now also runs Ka Pao and Margo, all three carrying Bibs at once.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the devilled eggs, which the Good Food Guide describes
jazzed up with sweet southern Indian spices and served with the tiniest chips imaginable and an indulgent daub of cavia,
then the chicken thigh,Perfectly pan-roasted and crisped
withJerusalem artichokes three ways,
and theal dente tubetti with brown butter, peas and guanciale
1. Finish on the pineapple carpaccio with lime and tarragon curd. - Avoid: treating it like a main-course restaurant. Three or four plates a head is the intended arithmetic, and a table that orders one each leaves hungry and confused.
What locals & experts say
- The Good Food Guide, rated Good: a
seasonally changing feast of mini creations,
with a charcuterie board thatshowcases proper mortadella.
1 - Michelin Guide UK, Bib Gourmand (2026 guide, held since 2014):
a hugely likeable bistro with a rustic edge thanks to its tile-backed open kitchen.
2 - Gordon Ramsay (2022): posted after eating here on 22 July,
Such a great dinner, thank you and congrats @oxandfinch.
4 - Local rec: Jeff's save, his note below.
Good to know
- Timing: lunch and dinner; check the Maps pin for exact hours.
- Booking: book, and book early. Weekend tables go weeks ahead and the room is not big.
- Getting there: the Finnieston end of Sauchiehall Street, a short walk from Kelvingrove Park and the Argyle Street strip, so it pairs with a drink either side.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Michelin bib gourmand. Where Gordon Ramsay eats when he visits. Delicious small plates."
Verdict
should-visit — Ox and Finch is a genuine standout on consistency. Michelin has given it a Bib Gourmand every year since it opened in 2014, which is a longer unbroken run than any other Glasgow restaurant, and the kitchen still turns out about thirty seasonal plates with real technique behind them: chicken thigh crisped and served with artichokes worked three ways, tubetti finished in brown butter with guanciale. Gordon Ramsay ate here and named it publicly before the 2026 guide ceremony. It falls short of must-visit because nothing on the menu is unavailable elsewhere in the city; the achievement is doing all of it well, for a decade, at a Bib price.
