serendipity
The morning roll here is built on a croissant roll they laminate in the kitchen, and the chef who set that menu ran the stoves at The Finnieston.
Why go
John Traynor opened this on 27 November 2023, in the Great Western Road unit that had been Morning Glory (Glasgow Foodie). Before he worked for himself he was a head chef at The Finnieston, and he cooked privately for the Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard and for the then manager Neil Lennon (Radio Clyde). His first shop was La Pastina, an Italian-style deli that opened on Byres Road in August 2021 and closed at the start of 2025, so this is where the team is now (GlasgowWorld). The menu changes with the season, and the spring 2025 version brought in salads, lighter plates and a rotating iced matcha. Traynor describes the kitchen as a playground where our chefs use their knowledge and passion for food to create some new customer favourites.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the honey chicken sandwich, which general manager Sheldon Macintosh names as the customer favorite and describes as
fried chicken with parmesan, fresh mozzarella on a toasted ciabatta with hot honey on top
1. If you want breakfast, take a roll, since the filling comes inside a house-made croissant roll. For something sweet, the brioche Hong Kong style French toast. - Avoid: arriving at weekend peak with somewhere to be. Bookings are not taken and the manager says the waiting list runs out the door most weekends. Also do not go looking for the deli side of this operation, because La Pastina shut in early 2025.
What locals & experts say
- Westender Magazine (Amy Glasgow, March 2025), placing it in the West End's five best brunch spots:
the breakfast rolls at Serendipity are served inside deliciously flaky, buttery home made croissant rolls for extra indulgence.
She adds,I highly recommend sampling their brioche Hong Kong style French toast.
2 - Sheldon Macintosh, general manager, to GlasgowWorld (April 2025), on why the street works:
you'd think with there being so many brunch cafes on Great Western Road that it would be too much competition but I think it's turned the street into an area where people go specifically looking for brunch and lunch.
1 - Glasgow Foodie (Emma Mykytyn, November 2023), on the opening menu: overnight oats with
caramelised apples, toasted pecans & cinnamon,
eggs benedict, croque monsieur and a full Scottish breakfast with a vegan-friendly version.4 - Local rec: Jeff's save. He left no note on it.
Good to know
- Timing: 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. Nothing in the evening.
- Booking: none taken. Walk in, and expect to wait at weekends.
- Midweek: the manager describes term-time midweek as quiet enough to study or read in, which makes it a solo working morning if you avoid the weekend.
- Price: the house pitches itself as reasonably priced, and the price band here reflects cafe rather than restaurant cost.
- Hygiene: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme rates the address a Pass, inspected 19 February 2025.5
Verdict
could-visit — A brunch cafe on the Great Western Road brunch strip, opened November 2023 by John Traynor, who was head chef at The Finnieston and private chef to Odsonne Edouard before he opened La Pastina on Byres Road. The reason to pick this one out of the six on the street is the baking: the breakfast rolls come on croissant rolls made in-house, and the sweet order is a brioche Hong Kong style French toast. Menus move with the season. No bookings, and the weekend list runs out the door, so it is a walk-in-early proposition rather than a plan.
