Bar Lotus
There is no back bar. Bartenders work a low station near the door, in a room with bare walls and two long communal tables, which is a working decision about what gets batched and what gets built in front of you (CLASS, 2024).
Why go
This is the London room for a team that runs bars in Shanghai and Chengdu, and the other five sites in the group are in China (Hot Dinners). It has been open on Kingsland Road since at least spring 2024. The East Asian reference sits in the glass rather than in the decor: a Martini frame rebuilt with green tomato and sake, dark rum steeped toward chrysanthemum and chamomile, a salted plum and shiso highball. CLASS, the UK bar trade magazine, gave it 8 out of 10 and called the list well-balanced, seasonal.
The palette runs indigo and violet with red accents, taken from twilight and from lotus blossom, and the lighting is kept low and selective. Beer is bottled, and there is no cask.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Sango, which CLASS records as a Martini-inspired build with green tomato and sake. That is the drink that tells you whether the kitchen-side thinking here is real, because green tomato is an acid and a savory note at once. Then the Chamomile, dark rum with chrysanthemum and chamomile, for the other end of the list.
- Avoid: Monday, when the bar is closed, and anything before 6pm, which is when the door opens. If you want cask ale, this is the wrong room.
What locals & experts say
- Clinton Cawood, CLASS (2024), 8/10: the UK bar trade's own magazine on it.
It doesn't get much more minimalist than cool Dalston drinking spot Bar Lotus,
witha well-balanced, seasonal list
thatdraws on East Asian influences,
landing asa classy addition to Kingsland Road's cocktail scene.
1 - Joe Mackertich, Time Out Editor-in-Chief (2025):
The drinks at Bar Lotus are special. Inventive, eye-catching and, crucially, shockingly well executed.
On the room,a kind of 1980s fever dream of a venue. It's retro avant garde.
On the team,The bar staff are unfailingly helpful, patient and sweet-natured.
2 - CAMRA (pub database): files it as a
Cocktail Bar with bottled beer,
and confirms there is no cask ale.4 - Local rec: from Jeff's own list, and one of his named favorites (his note below).
Good to know
- Timing: closed Monday. Tuesday to Thursday 6pm to midnight, Friday and Saturday 6pm to 2am, Sunday 6pm to 11pm.
- Booking: walk in.
- The room: two large communal sharing tables and small tables for two along one wall. Dark, sparse, and lit selectively.
- Getting there: 480 Kingsland Road, closest to Dalston Junction.
- Hygiene: FSA rating 5, Hackney, inspected 10 July 20265.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "One of my favorite cocktail bars." REAL.
Verdict
should-visit — There is no back bar. Drinks are built at a low station near the door, which forces a bar to be deliberate about what it preps and what it makes in front of you. The list is East Asian in reference rather than in decoration: a Martini worked with green tomato and sake, dark rum with chrysanthemum and chamomile. CLASS, the UK bar trade magazine, gave it 8 out of 10, and Time Out's editor-in-chief called the drinks 'shockingly well executed'. The team runs bars in Shanghai and Chengdu and this is their London room. Worth the trip up Kingsland Road, though there is no award with a year on it to make it more than that.
