Jeff's note

Chiave

Every cocktail on Bilal Tekec's list is paired to a song you reach by QR code, and the conceit holds up under a stranger's scrutiny: Time Out's reviewer worked out unprompted that the savory, olive-oil-centric martini called Spybreak takes its name from a 1997 Propellerheads single (Time Out, July 2026).

Why go

Chiave is Italian for key, and the bar is a small room on Redchurch Street with exposed brick, low light and a front that opens fully onto the street. Andrzej Lukowski reviewed it for Time Out on 23 July 2026, gave it four stars out of five and marked it Recommended, then placed it sixth in the magazine's twelve best bars in Shoreditch. What he says about the drinks is worth taking at face value: they are "tasteful remixes of tried and tested cocktails," which is praise for execution rather than invention. The snack list is short on purpose. Lukowski noted that it "refuses to get into small plates territory," and the most elaborate thing on it is a GBP 10 plate of crackers with cream cheese and mushroom truffle sauce.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: Flamenco Sketches, named after the Miles Davis piece. Time Out's pick, in Lukowski's words: a sensational pomegranate and raspberry-based vodka cocktail-slash-fruit explosion that also comes in a non-alcoholic variety.1 The Spybreak martini if you want the olive oil. The cracker plate if you want anything to eat.
  • Avoid: sitting anywhere but the front on a warm day. Time Out's own tip is to "do anything in your power to get a window seat."

What locals & experts say

  • Andrzej Lukowski, Time Out (23 July 2026), 4 out of 5 stars, Recommended: What makes it magical on a hot day is grabbing a seat by the fully open front and just watching backstreet Shoreditch drift by like an unusually trendy Mediterranean country. Chiave is in no way flamboyant, but the vibes are immaculate.1
  • Time Out, 12 Best Bars in Shoreditch (2026): number 6 on the list, with the same four stars and Recommended tag.2
  • Local rec: Satnam sent Jeff here. Satnam also put Planque on his list. REAL.

Good to know

  • Where: 36 Redchurch Street, E2 7DP, between the Owl and the Pussycat and the Allpress roastery.
  • Size: small. Best for two, workable for four, wrong for a group.
  • Booking: the venue takes reservations through its own site and runs a separate group-booking page. Worth doing on a weekend.
  • The music: each drink carries a QR code to a playlist. There is a proper soundsystem, which Lukowski confirmed.
  • Reported but unverified: listings describe a basement room with a DJ booth, and say the owners run an independent record label called Fake Society. No critic, guide or page of the bar's own confirms either, so treat both as unconfirmed.
  • Prices: no critic or guide states a cocktail price and the bar publishes none. The only figure on record is the GBP 10 snack plate, and reports elsewhere put drinks in the mid-teens.
  • Dietary: nothing published that could be read. The venue site is a JavaScript shell and the menu is a PDF the crawler cannot open, so ask at the bar.
  • Hygiene: rating 5, Tower Hamlets, last inspected 26 March 20263.

Verdict

could-visit — Go if you are on Redchurch Street and want a drink made properly in a room that is not shouting. Time Out gave it four stars and Recommended in July 2026 and put it sixth in the borough's twelve best bars, but the same reviewer was clear that Bilal Tekec's list is built from 'tasteful remixes of tried and tested cocktails' rather than invention, and that the bar 'is in no way flamboyant'. The song-pairing conceit is more than decoration, since a stranger recognized a Propellerheads reference in a savory olive-oil martini without being told. The bar is small, the food stops at snacks, and the best thing in the place is a seat by the fully open front on a warm evening. Nothing here is worth a detour across London.

Order

  • Flamenco Sketches, a pomegranate and raspberry vodka drink named after the Miles Davis piece, also made without alcohol
  • Spybreak, a savory olive-oil martini named after the 1997 Propellerheads single
  • The crackers with cream cheese and mushroom truffle sauce, the most elaborate thing on a snack list kept deliberately tiny
