CRATE Bar & Pizzeria Hackney Wick
Local people designed and built the bar and the furniture out of reclaimed material, and it has poured beer beside the canal since 2012.1
Why go
Crate opened in Queen's Yard in 2012 as a brewpub and a pizzeria at once, later took the Brew Shed across the yard, then went into administration in mid-2020.2 Trumans bought the Brew Shed and it has since closed. What survived is the original room in the White Building, pouring keg, can and bottle, with up to fifty other bottled beers alongside its own.1 Pizza runs to 10pm and to 11pm on Friday and Saturday. The wheelchair entrance is on the water.
Order this / avoid
- Order: a Crate beer with a pizza, which is the pairing the business was built around, then go into the bottle list, which is the deeper part of the offer.
- Avoid: asking for cask, which CAMRA flags as unavailable, and looking for the Brew Shed, which is gone.
What locals & experts say
- CAMRA, on the room and the range:
Keg, canned and bottled beers,(not all botled conditioned). Up to 50 other bottled beers are also on offer. The bar and furnishings were designed and built by local people using reclaimed materials.

Verdict
could-visit — A canal-side brewpub and pizzeria in Queen's Yard since 2012, with the bar and the furniture built by local people out of reclaimed material and up to fifty bottled beers behind the taps. It has been through the wringer: administration in mid-2020, the Brew Shed across the yard sold off to Trumans and now closed, and what is left is the original room. Pizza runs to 10pm most nights and 11pm on Friday and Saturday, and the wheelchair entrance is the waterside one. No cask at all. It sits mid-ladder because CAMRA last surveyed the place in February 2019, so everything descriptive here is seven years old.
