Mikkeller Brewpub London
The brewhouse is in the building and runs 7.5 hectolitres a batch, so the beer in your glass came off a tank a few metres away.
Why go
Mikkeller opened its Shoreditch bar first and then, a year later on 26 October 2019, put this on Exmouth Market with Rick Astley as a partner. It runs over two floors and 264 square metres, with a bar, a restaurant and a brewery that supplies the bar with completely fresh beer and infuses the space's 264 square meters with the comforting aroma of malt and hops
(Mikkeller). Mikkel Borg Bjergsø's line at the opening was that London has a great brewing scene and many new, young breweries, and we are really looking forward to becoming a part of it
. The designer's framing is that this is a brewery that happens to contain a restaurant. On the food side it runs a residency: the food hygiene register lists a separately registered kitchen, Lucky's Hot Chicken, trading inside the pub.
Order this / avoid
- Order: whatever came off the brewhouse downstairs. Something from the resident kitchen, which at the last check was hot chicken.
- Avoid: coming for a quiet drink, since the venue itself promises loud laughter. Turning up for one specific beer, since they brew on site in small batches. Mixing it up with the Shoreditch bar, which is a different premises on Hackney Road.
What locals & experts say
- Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, Mikkeller's founder, at the opening:
London is a fantastic city with a great brewing scene and many new, young breweries, and we are really looking forward to becoming a part of it.
1 - Mikkeller on what the room is for:
a space where beer and food are both crafted and enjoyed; it's a space where loud laughter seems to be the norm instead of hushed small talk.
1 - Nobody independent has written about it. No bylined review, no award and no chef vote was found, and the venue's own site could not be opened in either fetch lane. The beer-specific proxies that would settle this, Untappd and RateBeer, have not been read.
Good to know
- Where: 37-39 Exmouth Market, EC1R 4QL, Clerkenwell.
- The other one: Mikkeller Bar London is a separate premises at 2-4 Hackney Road in Shoreditch, and none of its evidence applies here.
- The kitchen: a guest operation rather than a house one. The food hygiene register lists Lucky's Hot Chicken registered separately at this address.
- The room: two floors, 264 square metres, and loud by design.
- Hygiene: FSA rating 5, inspected 27 May 2025, all three components clean. The resident kitchen holds its own rating 5 from 30 May 2025.2
Verdict
could-visit — The brewery is in the building. Mikkeller and Rick Astley opened this in October 2019, a year after the Shoreditch bar, on two floors of Exmouth Market with a brewhouse that runs 7.5 hectolitres a batch and pours straight into the room. That is capital spent on craft rather than a taproom selling somebody else's kegs, and the food side is a residency: the statutory register shows a separately registered kitchen, Lucky's Hot Chicken, trading inside the pub. What is missing is the thing drinkers actually judge a beer venue on, which is what is pouring and how often it changes. No tap count, no rotation cadence, no enthusiast read, no bylined review, and the pub's own website is a JavaScript shell that neither fetch lane can open. So it sits at could-visit on the evidence rather than on the impression, and it should move the moment somebody reads the tap list.
