Noble Rot Mayfair
Head chef Adam Wood's first job out of school was three years with Marcus Wareing, whose custard tart went to the late Queen's 80th birthday banquet, and the duck egg custard tart here is the direct descendant (Hot Dinners).
Why go
Dan Keeling and Mark Andrew opened this in April 2023, taking the Shepherd Market site that had been the French bistro Boudin Blanc and leaving most of the room alone (Harden's). Noble Rot started as a wine magazine before it was a restaurant group, and the cellar is still the argument: the Good Food Guide rates the list one of the best in London. Wood's menu is short and European, running to beef tartare with green tomatoes and Ossau-Iraty, smoked ravioli with courgette and preserved lemon, and Iberico pork with runner beans (Good Food Guide). Two floors of polished wood tables and red banquettes, no background music, and a separate bar at the front.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the duck egg custard tart with sea salt, around £12 with spiced poached rhubarb, orange and Sauternes; Jeff flagged the same dish. For two, Harden's picks
the duck with blood orange to share is a triumph.
2 - Avoid: booking the dining room when you want one glass and a snack. The front bar takes walk-ins and pours the same list.
What locals & experts say
- The Good Food Guide:
The wine list is simply one of the best in London, an outstanding, deeply researched and inspiring document.
1 - The Good Food Guide on the kitchen:
The short, Euro-accented menu offers dishes that are (mostly) straightforward assemblies with inspired finishing touches.
1 - Harden's (scores): food 3/5, service 4/5, ambience 4/5, with
the interior has a lot of charm and leans into an 'old London' vibe.

Good to know
- Timing: the venue publishes separate restaurant, terrace and wine bar hours, so check the site before a late arrival. Lunch runs Monday to Saturday.
- Booking: essential for the dining room, through SevenRooms or the Mayfair email; the bar is walk-in.
- Groups: main dining room tables go up to six people. The private dining room takes twelve.
- Price: $$$ a la carte, with a set lunch at two or three courses that is the cheapest way into the cellar.
- Outside: terrace seating on Shepherd Market. Jeff's note calls it a garden, which is the same tables under a different name.
- Location: 5 Trebeck St, a two minute walk from Green Park.
Craft signals (wine: depth and editorial authority, not cadence)
No evolution: value is recorded here on purpose. The craft axis is depth and buying authority: the group grew out of a wine magazine, its list is built by people who write about wine for a living, and the by-the-glass offer exists to open bottles most restaurants would only sell whole. That is a cellar and a point of view rather than a rotation, and nobody has published a glass-list cycle or a tasting programme to score cadence on. The kitchen moves with the season, which the set lunch reflects, but the wine is why the room exists and the wine is deliberately not a moving target.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Wine bar with a garden. Duck egg custard tart" REAL.
Verdict
should-visit — Worth the detour for the list. The Good Food Guide calls the wine list one of the best in London and Noble Rot's whole business is wine, so this is a place to drink above your usual grade at prices the group is known for holding down. The kitchen is good rather than remarkable, which Harden's marks at 3/5, and the room caps at six, so it earns the rung on the cellar and the custard tart, not on the cooking overall.
