Beer bar with good tap takeovers. Local rec for best pub.

Jeff's note

Sutton Arms

Three changing cask beers and no regular beer at all, in a pub that has been a free house since 1991, with Kernel, Fyne Ales and Oakham the names that come round most often (CAMRA, surveyed January 2026).

Why go

The building carries a local listing and works the corner of Great Sutton Street and Berry Street with two frontages, granite pilasters, two lanterns and a painted timber fascia. It was a Whitbread pub before it went independent in 1991, and it takes its name from Thomas Sutton, the 17th-century financier who founded the Charterhouse a few minutes south. CAMRA's East London and City branch calls it a "traditional after-work corner pub with side bar," which is what the room is, five hundred meters from Farringdon. Because the cellar runs on rotation with nothing permanent, the answer to what is on changes weekly: Ossett's Butterley, a 3.4% session bitter, was pouring a week before this entry was written. Real cider comes from Seacider, Beardspoon or Ross on Wye. Since November 2024 the pub has had a sister, the Kings Arms in Bethnal Green, which is the only public link between the two.

Order this / avoid

  • Order: a pie. CAMRA's survey is specific about it: The food offering now consists of a varied selection of pies served from a warm bar top display unit.1 Then ask which of the three casks went on most recently, since there is no house beer to name.
  • Avoid: a Sunday night. Last orders are 7pm, and Saturday shuts at 10pm. Also avoid walking to the wrong one: a Fuller's pub called the Sutton Arms sits at 6 Carthusian Street in Farringdon, and a third, in Hornchurch, was converted into the first Taptide bar in 2026.

What locals & experts say

  • CAMRA, East London & City branch (surveyed 9 January 2026, record updated 5 July 2026): Former Whitbread pub, a free house since 1991. Named after 17th century plutocrat Thomas Sutton, who founded nearby Charterhouse. Traditional after-work corner pub with side bar. The upstairs function room is rarely used. The beer record reads 3 changing beers and 0 regular beers.1
  • CAMRA, on the sister pub (record updated 14 February 2026): the Kings Arms in Bethnal Green was taken over in November 2024 and is now the sister pub of the Sutton Arms in Clerkenwell.2
  • No critic has written about this pub. The branch survey is descriptive, so this entry carries no evaluative quote, and that is a gap in the record.
  • Local rec: Jeff's own pick for best pub. REAL, and see his note below.

Good to know

  • Hours: noon to 11pm Monday to Friday, noon to 10pm Saturday, noon to 7pm Sunday.
  • Booking: none. Walk in. The upstairs function room exists but CAMRA notes it is rarely used.
  • Access: a single step at both entrances and no accessible toilet.
  • The room: corner bar plus a side bar, pavement seating outside, dog friendly, family friendly, wi-fi, sport on TNT and terrestrial.
  • Which one: 16 Great Sutton Street, EC1V 0DH. The FSA register lists the same street number under EC1V 0DN, which is probably the Berry Street frontage.
  • No website. The pub is on X as @SuttonArms and Instagram as @suttonarms, and CAMRA lists no site.
  • Dietary: nothing published. CAMRA does track vegan and gluten-free status per beer, and the cask spotted most recently was marked as neither.
  • Hygiene: rating 4, Islington, last inspected 5 November 20254.

Craft signals (beer: a committed rotating cellar)

Two signals, and the first is Jeff. His note names tap takeovers specifically and files the pub as a local rec for best pub, which is first-hand evidence plus practitioner word-of-mouth. The second is structural: CAMRA's January 2026 survey records three changing beers and zero regular beers, with Fyne Ales, Kernel and Oakham named as the rotating sources and Ossett Butterley logged as a short-lived guest. Zero regulars is the number that matters, because it means every line is a buying decision rather than a contract.

Jeff's take (his words)

  • Note: "Beer bar with good tap takeovers. Local rec for best pub." REAL. The tap-takeover part does not match CAMRA's January 2026 survey, which records three changing casks, no regular beer, and a traditional corner pub. Either the pub runs keg takeovers CAMRA does not count, or the note belongs to a different venue. Worth him checking, because his verdict on it is the strongest claim in the file.

Verdict

should-visit — Worth the detour, and the two best pieces of evidence are Jeff's own. His note calls it a beer bar with good tap takeovers and records it as a local rec for best pub, which is first-hand plus practitioner word-of-mouth, the top two rungs of the evidence hierarchy. The cellar backs them: CAMRA's January 2026 survey logs three changing cask beers and zero regular beers, so no handpump is committed, with Fyne Ales, Kernel and Oakham named as the sources it rotates through and real cider from Seacider, Beardspoon or Ross on Wye alongside. The pub has been a genuine free house in EC1 since 1991, which is what makes that buying possible. The food is pies from a heated bar-top display and that is the whole offer, which is why this is a detour for a drinker rather than a night out. Weighing what is in the glass first is what moves it up: the previous ruling scored the pies.

Order

  • A pie from the warm bar-top display
  • Whichever of the three changing casks is on; Kernel, Fyne Ales and Oakham are the regulars in rotation
  • The real cider, usually Seacider, Beardspoon or Ross on Wye

At a glance

  • Booking: walk-in
  • Timing: all day, closes early, closed sun
  • Best for: drinks, solo, quick, groups ok
