The Audley Public House
The beef and the lamb come off Durslade Farm in Somerset, which the pub's owners also own, and the sausages come from the same farm shop (The Audley).
Why go
Artfarm, the hospitality company run by Hauser & Wirth co-founders Iwan and Manuela Wirth, took on this 41-43 Mount Street corner and reopened it in 2022. The building is Thomas Verity's, the architect of the Lord's pavilion, and the renovation was led by Luis Laplace from Paris (Wallpaper, 2022). Over the ground-floor bar is an abstract ceiling installation by Phyllida Barlow, built from collaged hand-painted paper, and it is the reason this room looks like nothing else in the trade. Executive chef Jamie Shears came from CUT at 45 Park Lane, having cooked under Gordon Ramsay, Chris Galvin and Jason Atherton (Luxury London, 2023). He then wrote a menu of Scotch eggs, sausage rolls and pies, which is a deliberate choice by a cook who spent years doing the opposite. Upstairs is Mount St. Restaurant, a separate first-floor dining room that opened on 12 October 2022 with a Rashid Johnson mosaic in the floor (Hot Dinners, 2022).
Order this / avoid
- Order: the Scotch egg. Time Out described it as
perfectly gooey and served in two halves, sunny side up.
On a Sunday, take the roast, because that is where the Durslade beef and lamb land. From the original pub menu, the smoked eel and horseradish on toast and the London particular, a split pea and ham hock soup, are the two dishes that read as a London pub kitchen rather than a Mayfair one. - Avoid: carrying cash, which the pub does not take. Also do not come downstairs asking for the lobster pie. That is a Mount St. Restaurant dish on the first floor.
What locals & experts say
- Jamie Shears, executive chef, in Luxury London (2023): on how he cooks,
Cook it well, keep it simple, and keep it clean. Use the best produce you can get hold of.
On the pub menu specifically,my simple aim was to create crowd-pleasers from scotch eggs to sausage rolls.
2 - Jordan Bassett, Time Out (2024): the Scotch egg
should be on permanent display at the Tate,
and on the room,It's pretty intoxicating to neck humble pints in such proximity to artistic greatness.
3 - Phyllida Barlow, on the ceiling commission, in Wallpaper (2022):
I said yes immediately, even though I have never done anything like this before.
1 - Great British Pub Awards (2023): shortlisted for Best City/Urban Pub, one of four London finalists, reported by Time Out food and drink editor Leonie Cooper on 24 July 2023. The category was won by The Turk's Head in Twickenham, so this was a shortlisting rather than a win.4
- Local rec: from Jeff's own list, filed for the 2023 pub award (his note below, and see the correction above).
Good to know
- Timing: 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday, 11am to 10.30pm Sunday and bank holidays. The kitchen stops at 10pm, and 9pm on Sunday.
- Booking: none downstairs. The pub is walk-in. Mount St. Restaurant on the first floor takes bookings and has four private rooms.
- Payment: card only.
- The art: Barlow's ceiling is in the pub itself. Rashid Johnson's mosaic and Anj Smith's turret fresco are upstairs, along with Warhol and Freud works in the restaurant.
- Dietary: no allergen, vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free statement is published by the pub, so ask at the bar.
- Hygiene: FSA rating 5, Westminster, inspected 9 October 2025, filed for the whole building as The Audley And Mount Street7.
Craft signals (kitchen: named growers and a seasonal card)
Two signals, both on the plate. The kitchen publishes its own sourcing policy, a named set of farmers, growers and makers supplying seasonal UK produce with the group's own Somerset farm among them, which is the buying relationship that makes a moving menu possible6. The second is the format itself: a pub downstairs and a dining room above under the same kitchen, with the card rewritten as the farm and the market change rather than held as a signature list. The Artfarm restoration and the art on the walls are Experience and do not carry the ranking.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "UK urban Pub award 2023" REAL.
Verdict
should-visit — Two things make this worth crossing Mayfair for. The beef and lamb come off Durslade Farm in Somerset, which Artfarm owns, so the Sunday roast is a closed supply line rather than a menu boast, and the sausages come from the same farm shop. Second, Jamie Shears cooked under Gordon Ramsay, Chris Galvin and Jason Atherton and ran the pass at CUT at 45 Park Lane, then took the job and decided the menu should be Scotch eggs and sausage rolls made properly. Add a Phyllida Barlow ceiling over the ground-floor bar and there is no other pub in London with this combination. It stops short of must-visit because the cooking is deliberately unambitious, which is the point of it.
