The Hand & Marigold Free House
The pub was dark for four years, reopened as a free house in March 2025 after being
attractively refurbished from an empty shell, and fourteen months later South East London CAMRA voted it both SE1 District Pub of the Year 2026 and its overall Branch Pub of the Year 2026 (London Drinker, March 2025; CAMRA, surveyed July 2026).
Why go
It is a Victorian street-corner pub, once a Watneys house and more recently owned by the Wellington Pub Company, and it is now a single room with a central bar and no tie. The publican, whom CAMRA names only as Oli, also runs the Trafalgar in Merton, and in 2026 both of his pubs appear among the twelve branch winners competing for Greater London Pub of the Year. Four cask lines run and every one of them changes, with one usually coming from a local brewery, so there is nothing here to order by name. In a single week in July 2026 the casks included Downlands Best, Anspach & Hobday's Ordinary Bitter, Marble Manchester Bitter, Sureshot Milson, Burnt Mill Pintle and Blackjack's Early-Days Northern Porter. Twelve keg lines sit alongside them, described by CAMRA as a large selection of rare keg beers, and the real cider has run to Pilton and Hallet's. The building is registered as an Asset of Community Value.
Order this / avoid
- Order: whichever of the four casks went on most recently, and ask which one is the local. CAMRA's own summary of the offer at the reopening was
four unusual, changing real ales and a large selection of rare keg beers.
3 Show a CAMRA card for 7.5% off. - Avoid: coming for dinner. CAMRA lists no food here at all. Also avoid a Monday lunchtime, since the doors open at 4pm, and a late weekend, since Saturday and Sunday finish at 10pm.
What locals & experts say
- South East London CAMRA, 2026:
Local CAMRA Branch SE1 District Pub of the Year 2026
andOverall local Branch Pub of the Year 2026.
1 - London Drinker, CAMRA (27 May 2026): listed among the twelve Greater London branch winners, which
are judged for the overall national award, won for 2025 by the Tamworth Tap.
Branch panels score on eight criteria, the first beingquality and condition of real ale/cider/perry,
and the piece notes that every pub in the competition isindependently operated and free of tie.
2 - CAMRA, South East London branch (surveyed 7 July 2026):
A friendly one time Watneys Victorian street corner pub consisting of a single room with central bar... Oli also manages the Trafalgar in South Wimbledon, which was South West London CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2024.
1 - No critic or food desk has written about this pub in anything readable. Londonist has a page for it and both fetchers are locked out, one by a 403 and one by a robots rule. That gap is the reason this entry rests entirely on CAMRA.
- Local rec: on Jeff's list, as part of what he calls the borough trifecta. REAL, and see his note below.
Good to know
- Where: 244 Bermondsey Street, SE1 3UH. Buses 1, 42, 78 and 188 pass within 400 meters and London Bridge is 950.
- Hours as CAMRA has them: Monday 4pm to 11pm, Tuesday 1pm to 11pm, Wednesday to Friday noon to 11pm, Saturday and Sunday 1pm to 10pm. CAMRA's hours table does not extract cleanly, so treat this as indicative and check before a Monday trip.
- Booking: none. Walk in. There is a downstairs function room CAMRA calls comfortable.
- Access: step-free apart from a three-inch step at the front door, level throughout, and an accessible WC. The downstairs room is reached by steps with a handrail on the left going down.
- No kitchen. CAMRA lists no food. Bring an appetite somewhere else on Bermondsey Street.
- Members' discount: 7.5% for CAMRA members. Glasses are lined, mainly on the pub's branded sleever pints.
- Also: pavement seating at the front, dog friendly, no website. Instagram is @handandmarigoldse1.
- Dietary: not applicable in the usual sense, since there is no food. Of the beers CAMRA has logged here, only Marble Manchester Bitter is marked vegan.
- Hygiene: rating 5, Southwark, last inspected 13 September 20254.
Craft signals (beer: rotation confirmed by the record and the branch panel)
Two drink-side signals. CAMRA's July 2026 beer record has four changing casks and no regular beer at all, with six unrelated guest breweries logged inside the recent window and three more named as the typical sources1. The second is the branch verdict: SE1 District Pub of the Year 2026 and overall Branch Pub of the Year 2026, which are judgments on quality and condition of real ale rather than on the tiling. Fourteen months from empty shell to branch winner is the cellar, not the room.
Jeff's take (his words)
- Note: "Part of the borough trifecta" REAL. Which three pubs he means could not be established. No source names a trio, and this one is on Bermondsey Street rather than in Borough proper. CAMRA puts Simon the Tanner next door, and his own list separately carries Lord Clyde and The Royal Oak under Borough, so one of those is the likely partner. Worth him confirming.
Verdict
should-visit — Worth the detour if beer is the point of the evening. The pub was a Wellington house, went dark in 2021, and reopened as a free house in March 2025 after being refurbished from an empty shell by the publican who runs the Trafalgar in Merton. Fourteen months later South East London CAMRA made it both SE1 District Pub of the Year 2026 and its overall Branch Pub of the Year 2026, which puts it among the twelve Greater London branch winners judged for the national award. Four cask lines all change, one usually local, and there are twelve keg taps that CAMRA calls a large selection of rare keg beers, plus real cider from Pilton and Hallet's. There is no food and the weekend close is 10pm, so it is an afternoon or early-evening room rather than a night out.
