It opens at 7.30am for espresso, and three nights a week the same counter becomes a wine bar. That second half is not on the pin, and it is the better reason to go.
Why go
The room sits inside Cathedral Arcade, cut through the Nicholas Building in 1926 and still carrying its leadlight arched ceiling, running from Swanston Street to Flinders Lane across from St Paul's. Liinaa Berry, a sommelier who writes for Star Wine List, describes finding it the way most people do: a few chairs scattered along the corridor and enough curiosity to look in. What she found on the wine side is the argument for coming back at night. The list is short, and she is precise about why that is a compliment: "What's behind the bar is not about abundance, but intention." The owner, Will, pours it himself between making someone a coffee and plating a snack.

What it actually is, according to the only person who has written seriously about it, is a counter inside the 1926 Cathedral Arcade that opens at 7.30am for espresso and then, three nights a week, turns into a wine bar with a short list and the owner pouring it. Liinaa Berry, a working sommelier, rates that list for intention rather than size: no filler, nothing on it to look good. She also says you do not stumble across it, which is true, because it is inside an arcade off Swanston Street with a few chairs in the corridor. It sits at could-visit and not higher for one reason: one person has assessed it, nobody has assessed the coffee at all, and nobody has written down which three nights the wine happens. It is worth finding if you are already in the arcade. Do not build an evening around it until somebody confirms the nights.
