Code Black Coffee
Two espresso machines run at the front and one is reserved entirely for takeaway, so the morning rush never stalls the people who sat down to drink.
Why go
Joseph Haddad, who was already running the Cafenatics stores through the CBD, put this roasting house on Weston Street just off Sydney Road, and the Victorian Barista Championships were held in it on its opening weekend (Broadsheet). The roasting still happens in the building. The bar runs a seasonal blend alongside a single origin that rotates, and the venue names the current one down to the washing station, a Kenya Gathaithi AA Washed, which you can take as filter, as pour-over, or as a tasting flight (Code Black). Beans go over the counter for home. The kitchen runs a seasonal menu on the side of all that.
Order this / avoid
- Order: the tasting flight, which is the argument for sitting down. Whatever washed single origin is on, as pour-over. The seasonal blend as espresso.
- Avoid: hunting for it on Sydney Road, because it sits off the strip on Weston Street. And turning up after five, since it shuts at 5pm every day.
What locals & experts say
- David Urwin, Broadsheet, 2013: "The back of the Code Black menu simply reads in small font: 'The Sublime and The Ridiculous', which basically sums this place up. Sublime in the quality of its design and ridiculous in the excellence of its execution." ref
- The same piece, on the coffee operation: the day-to-day is "fairly formidable", with the seasonal blend and a rotating in-house single origin, "pumped out by two machines (one that only provides takeaways, so no excessive waits in the morning before work)". ref
- The gap, stated: the industry competed here on opening weekend, and no Code Black barista placing has been found since. No award, no chef vote in the 74-pick Melbourne corpus, and no independent assessment of a cup since 2013.
Good to know
- Where: 15-17 Weston St, Brunswick, tucked off Sydney Road.
- Sites: eight, including Coffee Haus in North Melbourne, Flinders Lane, South Melbourne, Spencer Street, 360 Collins Street and Queensbridge in Southbank. This entry is the Brunswick roastery.
- Timing: 7am to 5pm, seven days.
- Booking: walk-in.
- Also sold: retail beans over the counter.
- Food safety: Safe Food Victoria's register of convictions, updated 21 July 2026, does not list this business or this address. Victoria publishes court convictions under s.53D of the Food Act, held for twelve months each, which is narrower than a UK hygiene rating.
Jeff's take (his words)
Nothing from Jeff. There is no Melbourne saved-places export in this repo, so jeff_note stays empty and the body is sourced virtual voice.
Verdict (Chef Jeff ladder)
could-visit — Worth the detour off Sydney Road if you want to sit and taste rather than grab and go. Joseph Haddad built this roasting house behind the strip, and the Victorian Barista Championships were held here on its opening weekend, which tells you the room was made for people who compete. It still roasts in the building, sells the beans over the counter, and pours filter, pour-over or a tasting flight. The current single origin is named properly, a Kenya Gathaithi AA Washed, which is the level of detail that separates a cafe with a grinder from a roaster with a position. Two machines run out front and one is reserved for takeaway so the morning queue does not block the room. It stays at could-visit because the only independent assessment in reach is from February 2013, the chef and the coffee lead named in it are long gone, nobody here holds a competition result, and no Melbourne chef in the vote corpus names it.
