The beans are Regenerative Organic Certified, which is a farming standard with an audit behind it rather than a word on a bag, and the shop sells the lots whole rather than hiding them in a house blend.
Why go
Dukes has held the ground floor of Ross House since March 2013 and roasts its own coffee offsite, buying from small growers who farm under agroforestry (Dukes, City of Melbourne). Every lot is traceable to the farm it came from, and the current single origins are Colombian and Ethiopian. There is a microlot program too, which is the tell that somebody is buying at the level where individual pickings matter rather than blending for consistency. Concrete Playground's fit-out note is worth knowing before you plan an hour here: a Chris Connell room in natural timber and green trim with only a few seats, better suited to quick drop-ins and takeaways than long, lazy visits

Verdict
could-visit — Go if you are on Flinders Lane, and do not cross town. What is genuinely good here is the buying: Dukes roasts its own offsite, sells Regenerative Organic Certified lots rather than a house blend, runs a microlot program, and works with small growers practising agroforestry. Those are auditable claims, which is more than most sustainability copy manages. Concrete Playground's Libby Curran calls it one of the CBD's best coffee spots and tells you to order a Costa Rica pour-over. What is not here is anyone else's judgment: no competition placing, no award, and not one of the 74 Melbourne chef picks. The room is a few seats on the ground floor of Ross House built for the walk-up. That is a good stop on the way somewhere, which is exactly this rung.
